Parts of Me (part 4)
-A Leonard McCoy x reader mini series-
Part 1 Â Part 2Â Part 3
When Dr. McCoy stepped back into the room, he looked a little more sullen than before, a little more...
You resisted the temptation to get your display to scan for emotion, because thatâs what Mr. Scott said brought on your headaches.Â
âIs everything alright?â You asked as the doctor wordlessly resumed his spot in front of the screen next to the bed.Â
âOther than my fellow crew-members and friends being trapped down there, fighting your people, everythingâs just peachy.âÂ
You didnât need your display to tell you that he was being snarky, and you were a bit taken aback. Â The doctor had been nothing but kind to you up until now, what changed?
âDid I do something wrong, doctor?â
His eyes flicked closed and he let out a breath, his shoulders falling a little before he responded. âNo, itâs not you.â He seemed to want to continue, but stopped.
âWhen can I be returned to my people?â You asked, and you could feel the effects of the relaxant slowly starting to wear off.Â
Dr. McCoyâs eyes suddenly flicked to yours. Â Hurt. Your display provided without you ordering it to.Â
âYou want to go back there?â His voice was rough.Â
âAlllllright, lady and gent, shall we take another look at what weâve got goinâ on here?â Scottyâs loud voice cut through the tension that Dr. McCoyâs question left hanging.Â
His eyes lingered on yours for a second more.Â
âDidnât you fix it when I almost blacked out last time?â You questioned, turning now towards the hesitant-looking engineer.Â
âYes... anâ no.â He grabbed his PADD and sidled up next to you. âYe see I could only shut down thaâ part temporarily, the signals are becoming too compressed to stay stable for long periods of time.â
âCompressed?â
âItâs building up too much pressure, thaâ no matter how many times we release it, itâs goinâ tâa continue to build back up.â
You contemplated the meaning of this for a minute. âSo youâre saying if I continue to use my ISD that I will eventually overload the system?â
âISD?â He asked.Â
âInternal Software Display.â
âAh... and yes, eventually, the signals will put too much pressure on the nerves anâ tissue thaâ they are attached to and ye will eventually... short circuit, for lack of a better word.âÂ
âYour brain will shut off and you will die.â Dr. McCoyâs voice cut in and you looked up at him, the annoyance in his eyes making anger fizzle in your fingers.Â
âDo you know nothing of my species? Â We donât have brains, or nerves, or tissue, or hearts.â You looked at Dr. McCoy pointedly on the last word.Â
âThe thing is, you do. Â You do. Â You have a heart and a brain and nerves.â He stalked to his screen and turned it sharply so you could see it. Â âLook. Â Lungs and a stomach and everything.â
The glowing screen showed what looked like a green outline of a body. Â An x-ray, you recalled. Â But you had only heard of x-rays from classes youâd taken, and since your people never needed them, you had no idea what the inside of a body looked like, let a lone a human one.Â
âThis makes no sense to me. Â You could be showing me anything, anyone. Â I donât believe you.â You growled.Â
âItâs all right here!  Heart, lungs, brain.â He pointed to the different parts as he spoke. âAnd itâs a live x-ray from the bed youâre on, go on, move your arm, youâll see it move on the screen.â
You didnât move, only stared at him, your jaw set. âWhy are you doing this?â
âIâm trying to save you, damnit!â His chest heaved with angry breath and his eyes were alight with an emotion you couldnât place.Â
âYouâre not saving me by telling me lies, doctor. Â Now, take me back to my people.â You lifted your chin and tried to keep as much dignity as you could from your spot on the bed.Â
Dr. McCoy wasnât the one who responded this time. Â It was Scotty. Â âLass, if we send you back down there, youâll die. Â The software will overwhelm your system.â
âThen how do we fix it?â You fell back in the bed a bit.Â
Dr. McCoy spoke up again from behind Scotty, and his three words shook you to your core. Â âWe remove it.â
