King’s Maid : Previous | Next
Nothing is in chronological order, just what I feel like writing. You can consider the Queen as MC if you want. There's no real love triangles or anything, just idiots all being in love. (Sylus with his maid, Caleb with his queen)

The Queen returns.
You thought you knew busy.
The castle was in uproar. The city taking it as a chance for celebration. Streamers fill the air as well as colored smokes all in jubilant welcome for the Queen as she’s always followed closely by her personal guard.
He’s the captain of the king’s guard now, but you heard that he’s been the queen’s loyal protector from the time they were both children in her home country. You can’t remember his name.
The only one that wasn’t overly excited was the King himself… and you knew it only because you yourself felt a deep bitterness over the situation. He’s left you to just do training drills today before locking himself up in that study where you probably ruined whatever strangeness growing between you both. You released an aggravated little half yell as you slammed down a wooden training sword in the wood-be jugular of the straw dummy.
“Leave it to him to have you searching all over the place instead of greeting you like he should.” A masculine voice carried into the little corner of the training yard you’ve made your own.
“Caleb, don’t talk ill of the king you serve.” An amused feminine voice chided.
“I serve you, my lady.” Caleb scoffed.
Then both figures came to a stop as they took you in. Your maid uniform dirtied and your hair a fuzzy mess from your own sweat that beaded down your temple. Your arms shook slightly from the exerted force of your frustrations. There was no mistaking the glittering crown on the woman’s head though. Your heart dropped to your stomach as the Queen gave you a once over and the knight at her side a bored assessment of your threat level: none.
“Now there’s something you don’t see everyday.” The Queen cooed, clapping her gloved hands together in delight. You should hate the happiness on her face, but it’s read it left you… quite giddy. Similar to how it felt being praised by the head Mistress or your ma.
“What do you think you’re doing? This area is for the King’s Guard.” Caleb was glaring right at you, making the peasant moment shrivel and die as he took one step towards you.
A single hand on the pommel of his blade was threat enough to make your heart race. You might as well be a little-
“Kitten…” hearing Sylus behind you was such a relief your legs nearly gave out from under you as the practice blade dropped from your hand with a dull thump and strong hands had to take your upper arms as you made a sound nearing a whimper.
“I told you drills only and now you’ve over done it.” Sylus scolded with a little sigh. Then he looked towards the seething glare from Caleb, unfazed, then to his wife, and smiled.
“This small thing has been a bit of a… project. It’s not often a young woman tries to learn the skills of a knight.” The way Sylus seemed to direct his words at the Queen made her giggle.
“Please. If they didn’t want me to fall in love with swordsmanship, they shouldn’t have told me I could have whatever I wanted.”
The easy banter between the two made you scowl, but it also seemed to grate on Caleb too.
“Captain- since you’ve seem to take your duty so seriously after being absent for several months…” the Queen drawled, amused by it all, “why don’t you help her train some, hm? She wishes to know swordsmanship? Well, there’s few better than you.”
Everyone looked like they hated the idea. Caleb looked ill suddenly, but you felt Sylus’s grip on your upper arms tightening slightly as apprehension tugged at your own heart.
“I have many words to share with my husband after all.” The Queen went on, uncaring of the reluctance of those around her as she confidently strode over to you and Sylus.
She took Sylus by his upper arm and winked at you. Again, you thought you’d feel that bitterness or anger or even despair but it made you smile instead. Confidence bloomed from her teasing whisper.
“Do feel free to threaten him that you’ll tell on him to me if he starts being too mean. He’ll shape up quickly into a good teacher I know he is.”
Sylus, for his efforts, only sighed and let a hand linger on you a while longer until you both made eye contact. That electric zing still zipped through your heart that made your cheeks go red.
“Of course. The day is yours after…” he glanced towards Caleb. “Training. Find the twins or Mephisto if something happens.” He murmured that last part much to the Queen’s snort of amusement before the royal pair left the area.
Mephisto had landed on your head and squawked when the big shadow of the Captain fell over you. Shyly, you look up at the unreadable face of the Queen’s knight.
“What’s your game, huh?”
You blinked, confusion gripping you as Mephisto bravely kept squawking his distaste of Caleb’s closeness.
“Game? Uh… well we kitchen staff like to make stories one sentence at a time? They usually end up these nonsensical things to make us laugh while passing the time-“
“Stop playing dumb. Your intentions. Are you trying to copy the Queen? You think you’ll get the King or something by being like her majesty?”
You just stared at him for several moments. Then the rumors of other servants of the castle hit you like a full-speed carriage.
“You’re an idiot.” You deadpan. The others were so right! This lad was absolutely smitten with his Queen. Your threat assessment was very real in his eyes.
“What did you just say?” Caleb glowered, getting in your space more while you (and Mephie) stared up in defiance.
“Didn’t the lady Queen order you to train me? You wouldn’t want to disappoint her, would you?” Oh, that’s why the Queen told you to use her name to make him cooperate. The Queen absolutely knew. What did her relationship with Sylus really mean then?
“Train you, huh…? Yeah. I can train you.” The look in his eye was pure evil, but you’re never one to back down from a challenge.
“Do your worst, pretty boy. I’ll be sure to be thorough in my review for her Ladyship.”
Mephisto flew off with an upset “cawww!!” As the competitive nature between you two sparked into something almost tangible.
