It's not that this MC genuinely wants to piss people off, because they're really good at towing the line between respecting people's boundaries and teasing. It's that MC is a little feral and thrives in environments of play-fighting. They would be someone who encourages people to be bolder and embrace their personal strengths, but they would also be doing this by being mildly annoying.

I'm thinking of that scene from Kaze Hikaru where Soji hides in bushes with a stick so he can ambush Sei to playfully 'SURPRISE ATTACK' as a valid training method. This MC's play fighting is the kind that bolsters people to feel more sure of themselves, and challenge themselves.

When this MC isn't playing, they would approach conflict very differently. They'd be incredibly ruthless when they feel pushed to the point of having to hurt someone. But, because of this, and their generally jovial nature, MC is very slow to anger and usually keeps a very level head, even if they're constantly being silly and cracking jokes.

They're a little feral, but the kind of feral that contains itself and inflicts loving torment on those they hold dear.

This would be an MC who absolutely is a little freak. You cannot harm them in a way that matters. In fact, they're really into it. They get a thrill when people show physical aggression towards them.

Rage character who is normally composed, but becomes terrifying when angry: "I'm gonna kill you. I've decided."

MC: "Joke's on you, I'm into that."

Rage character, now put off and flustered: ".. What?"

Eventually leading to scenes like;

Rage character: "I could snap your neck. Your windpipe would fit so well in my hands."

MC, grinning.

Rage character, sighing in resigned annoyance: "But that's what you want. You would only enjoy it. I cannot win."

"Not in a way that matters, at least."

I'm imagining an MC who ends up in a conversation like this;

Sweet, gentle, kind character who has a sense of honor and justice: "… Why does everyone wanna commit violence against you..?"

MC: "I have no idea." Turning to other people; "Hey guys, why do you feel bloodlust when you look at me?"

Intimidating character who loves teasing people: "Look, if you get to know MC long enough, you'll feel it too. It's inevitable."

Smart character who is a certified asshole: "MC loves getting their ass kicked. It's a love language thing."

Kind and honorable character: ".. Huh? Now that, I just don't believe! No one would enjoy getting their ass kicked!"

Smart asshole character: "Nah nah, you don't understand MC then. MC, do you want [Kind and honorable character] to kick your ass?"

MC, who desperately has a crush on [Kind and honorable character] and was trying to play it cool, now only capable of laughing in response.

Smart Asshole: "See? I rest my case."

Kind and honorable character, trying to defend MC's honor: "I didn't hear them confirm it! They're only laughing!"

Intimidating character: "They're laughing because it's true."

Smart Asshole: "MC, I need you to answer this question. Now."

MC's internal dialogue: "Don't say yes, it's a trap. Don't say yes, it's a trap-" What MC says out loud: "I don't think [Kind and honorable character] COULD kick my ass."

Room silence.

Kind and honorable character sputtering noises of disbelief and indignation, Intimidating character cackling, Smart asshole shouting "I FUCKING TOLD YOU!" MC, dissolving into laughter.

This would be an MC who consciously makes the choice to say things that makes people annoyed with them. An MC who can take it just as good as they dish it, so they attract the companionship of grittier and more gruff characters, and their presence encourages strength and grit in the characters around them. This is part of their charm, and also why people wanna kick their ass.

Cunning Ruthless character: "I used to be kind. I used to be sweet. I used to be different."

MC, now remembering when Cunning Ruthless character was younger, how they used to be sweet and kind and gentle and soft-spoken and a terminal people-pleaser. "… Actually, yeah, what happened to you?"

Cunning Ruthless character, remembering how MC tormented the people-pleasing out of them and pushed them to advocate for themself: "You did. You tormented me and I had to get good at kicking your ass."

MC, chuckling: ".. Well, you're stronger for it, I guess. You're welcome." MC flashing them a big, obnoxious grin, now laughing.

Cunning Ruthless character, slowly and lovingly reaching for MC's neck.

I like to think this phenomenon is surface-level, so their casual friendships are aggressive, but MC is actually really loving and kind when they get to know someone. They'll still be a lil' shit, but with a fierce love for people behind it. This would be an MC who would fight tooth and nail to help people when it matters, so the people around them love them and they have a lot of meaningful relationships.

This MC would be seen as incredibly strong and dependable, because they lift the people around them up. Even if they're gonna be annoying while they do it.

Their friends fiercely love them, and even though their friends would teasingly hunt them for sport, if anyone actually hurt MC for no good reason, those same friends would be p i s s e d. Hahahahaha

Like, it's open season on dunking on MC. They'll catch strays in any conversation, and take it laughing! But.. if MC ever showed up physically hurt, or emotionally fucked up from something? Those same friends would now be ready to skin the source of MC's pain alive.

Extra points if this MC doesn't like people seeing them hurt because they like to appear invincible/untouchable, so they don't tell their friends directly when other people or circumstances hurt them, and their friends only find out secondhand or MUCH later after the fact. Which then results in them being like "WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL US, ASSHOLE?!" cue more loving violence. Like forced self-care and making MC allow them to dote on them a little.

This one came to me because I saw this art post in which Azul gets woken up by the Tweels by an aggressive tackle, and I mused to myself "How would I handle waking up that way?"

And I remembered that I am notoriously a physically aggressive sleeper.

I'm talking, my brother once came into my room and grabbed me to wake me up, and the only thing I remember is waking up to someone touching me and opening my eyes to realize my fist was primed to punch him and my hand was gripping his shirt to hold him in place.

".. You ASKED me to wake you up??"

".. I am so sorry. You are so right. My b."

So this one goes out to my peeps who wake up swinging like they're in a bar fight.

First and foremost, characters who love to mess with people and see what makes them tick? They're gonna fuckin' love this little problem of yours. The first time you wake up swinging at them, they're going to get a thrill out of it, out of getting to see a new side of you. Bonus points if you're normally a chill person, because this is gonna make them see stars.

Responsible characters will find it off-putting and will earnestly be a little shocked at first. They'll make the connection pretty quickly that you probably had something in your life that made this a problem for you. Some environment of survival, where you weren't safe, even in your sleep. I hope you like protective people, because once a responsible character realizes this is a defense mechanism, they're gonna do everything within their power to make you feel physically safe. They might also be itching to personally kick some ass on your behalf.

Characters with a rough past might feel a certain kindredness with you. Seeing you become aggressive at being touched in your sleep would surprise them at first, but they'd instantly get it. They'd apologize, and if you tried to apologize for almost tearing their lights right out of their head, they'd probably just go "Nah, it was my bad for touching you in your sleep. Your reaction was fine." - If they weren't already hanging out with you, they definitely gravitate towards you now.

Sweet characters will probably panic. You wake up to wide eyes and cowering. When you get flustered and apologize, they just get kind of quiet and ask why you do that when touched in your sleep. Even if you tell them it's nothing serious, and that you feel more embarassed that anything, they will absolutely take it more personally. I feel like sweet characters would fall into two subsects where some would be scared/nervous around you when you're asleep - Meanwhile, others would catch on way more quickly than anyone else that it's a defense mechanism, and their anger on your behalf would be palpable.

Chill characters would laugh it off like "Haha, what the fuck my guy" but they'd probably be calculating what kinds of environments or incidents could have caused you to do that.

Your best bud type characters would scoff like "What the FUCK- CHILL" and probably reprimand you for scaring the crap out of them, but they'd also start asking a lot of questions. If you don't like answering questions, be prepared for them to tell everyone and their mother "Don't wake ___ up, they'll beat the crap outta you for it". You will never live it down, and they WILL laugh at you for it.

Calculating characters would probably be caught offguard if they woke you up and you almost punched their lights out. Temporarily shaken that they hadn't anticipated this outcome, they might need a minute before they'll re-regulate again. They will also be infinitely more interested in learning about you, since they obviously don't know enough.

Stoic characters wouldn't be phased by it, but they also would be concerned for you. Might tell the responsible characters about what you did so they can help you, if they feel like they themselves aren't equipped to help you.

Bonus;

I like the idea of Vil meeting an MC who likes to write.

Because writers are a very driven type of person which is almost the anthesis to everything Vil considers to be a driven person, but I also think there's a fun scenario where one would be exactly the person he needs.

Because writers create stories.

Vil wants to be the star of a story where he can be the hero. Where he gets to stay on the stage and is loved by the audience, and he gets to be one of the 'good guys'.

A good writer could rectify that.

This one’s taking a page right outta my own book tonight, as I cannot FUCKIN’ sleep, and it is COMPLETELY because I’m excited for something happening this weekend. ----- This is an MC who is rarely flappable. This MC remains relatively unflapped in most circumstances. It’s hard to get them flustered or get them to show a more unkempt aspect about themselves. The majority of the characters consider them to be suave, or at the very least, charismatic to a point. They figure the stoic responses to the world around them is because they’ve seen it all, lived it all, and they’re worldly in that regard.

Okay, so I’ve seen some concepts where the MC gets turned into a kid, or like, they get cloned with magic and their clone is a younger version of themselves, ect.. and that got me thinking - What if the MC the characters all know and love is really different from their younger self? The idea first came to me when I thought about a generally tough person whose childhood self was really loving and warm and sunshiny. Maybe that MC is someone who is rough around the edges and always ready for a fight, but their younger self is gentle and loving and just wants to learn about the strange new world around them. Maybe their childhood self is really warm and affectionate towards characters they normally ignore or avoid, which begins to cause people to question “What happened to them..?” Because, if their younger self was naturally outgoing and loving and accepting, what changed? And why? Did someone hurt them?

This one came to me while reading this cute post by @obeymefictionwriting  about the brothers from Obey Me! reacting to an MC with allergies to cats.

Because, I love cats, but I'm also very allergic to them.

So this MC would be one who maybe has allergies that aren't immediately life-threatening, but will cause significant discomfort and possibly hives if the contact with the allergen isn't contained and washed and meds taken.

I often find that I’m not strong enough to resist the allure of a cute kitty. If I find myself in a house with a cat, I won’t go out of my way to touch the cat, but if the cat comes to me... I’ll shower the little kitty with love and affection, and pets and just warmly gush about the kitty

And then I'll promptly get up once I've had my fill and look to the nearest person and announce "I must go wash myself and change my clothes, because I'm very allergic to cats." and the amount of times I've had people yell at me is a little funny.

I like the idea of an MC who, upon meeting someone who can’t cook well, actively gives them really bad ideas for cooking. This is a character whose cooking might already be considered lethal before MC comes along, and now that cooking inflicts psychic damage. I’m talking “Ugh, this soup needs something, just I just cannot tell what” MC, leaning over, looking at the soup: “... Carbonation.” “...” Character, looking slowly to MC. “...” MC, glancing at character. “... How do I carbonate the soup, MC” “Lemme introduce you to the soda stream” Hot, carbonated soup.

Imagining an MC who just, walks into a room, blood all over their hand just like, looking to the nearest person with authority like “This came out of my head.” causing characters to just freak the fuck out. MC’s like “Well, I mean, I don’t feel like I’m dying, but blood coming out of my head probably isn’t great.” while people are doting on them or panicking and freaking out or barely keeping their cools while they try to maintain the air of everything being okay.
