Jean holds a card up to Rochelle, and taps the printed number. âThis is a ten,â she explains to the toddler. Rochelle nods, her little fingers gripping the card, pulling it closer to her face.
âTen,â Rochelle repeats, glancing up to Jean. Across the table, Ivy rolls her eyes. âTen!â Rochelle shouts excitedly, throwing the card on the table as sheâs seen her Tia Jean do before. âFace!â Rochelle continues holding up a palm in victory, another act sheâs seen from Jean.
âYeah, yeahâ Ivy sighs with a shake of her head. She slides the pile of candy over the table. âI canât believe youâre teaching like a literal baby to gamble.â
Jean presses her hands gently to Rochelleâs ears. âItâs not gambling. Itâs number recognition,â She counters with a lift of her chin. âOnly with cards and earnings,â
Ivy scoffs, gathering the cards, shuffling them in a swift motion of her hands, her eyes trailing over to the kiddie pool where MC splashed around. âKids a fish,â she remarks, âsince we been out here he hasnât gotten out.â
Jean leans back. âWell you know who is father is, and what his father is,â she says, standing up. Rochelle clings to her, her own gaze settled on the sea only mere feet away.
âPapa there?â Rochelle asks suddenly, pointing to the crashing waves. Both Jean and Ivy pause. A small chill carries over the sea, and Jean holds Rochelle tighter. Jean and Ivyâs eyes meet, and Ivy stands up, calling MC over
âHow about lunch?â Jean asks, changing the subject. âYou mami should be back soon,â she says, walking towards the kitchen doors. With one glance back, she looks to the sea and silently wishes her friend is stop safe.
