Boitatá is a legendary creature in the folklore of Brazil. With a name that translates as "fiery serpent," it is similar to the will-o'-wisp. It has huge, fiery eyes that render it virtually blind by daylight, but by night, allow it to see anything.
It is said that Boitatá was originally a serpent that survived a great deluge, perhaps the Biblical flood. It ate the eyes from many drowned animals, and the collected light from those devoured eyes gave Boitatá its blazing gaze.
