Blog Post 5: Finalizing the Maze Escape VR Concept
With the Maze Escape VR concept locked in, it was time to transform ideas into tangible designs. I began creating new blockouts, starting with the player’s first encounter: standing before massive, ancient walls stretching far into the sky.
The initial area was designed to overwhelm and intrigue — the maze gates would remain closed until players solved a simple puzzle placed at the entrance. This would serve as an onboarding moment, teaching players the importance of environmental observation right from the beginning.
Inside, the maze itself would be divided into Earth, Water, and Fire zones, accessible only after players retrieved specific stones. To keep exploration intuitive yet mysterious, I incorporated symmetry into the design. This helped players navigate naturally while maintaining the sense of vast, labyrinthine complexity.
Our decision to replace direct combat with puzzle-solving and evasion created a gameplay loop that felt achievable yet exciting. Players would be challenged to survive encounters with alien creatures while exploring deeper into the ever-changing maze.
The blockouts already conveyed a sense of adventure and scale that matched our VR ambitions. I couldn’t wait to see these spaces filled with detailed assets and dynamic lighting effects.
