Okay so: max and Daniel both studied at some random north east US college and were best friends during college. Maybe danny did 1 or 2 gap years before coming to America and max went straight after high-school, so the age difference is more like in reality. After university they kinda lost touch, but never really. Nevertheless they basically never saw each other and life is just different and busy now. Maybe 5 years ? after finishing uni they both live in NYC but don't know the other also does. Some evening they magically see each other in a bar for the first time in idk 3 years ? They instantly hit off again and talk for the whole evening. During that they realize that they are both kinda broke. After 1 week of meeting and constant contact, daniel finds a apartment listing which looks perfect but is too expensive for one person. So daniel kinda goes crazy and asks max to move in with him. Max thinks it's a bad idea at first but also wants to make up for the years of lost contact. From then on its a classic roommates/friends to lovers trope :)
