[Song name- Artist |Character(s)| additional comments “song quote”]
Lemon Boy- Cavetown |Eiji and Ash| for me, this song navigates Eiji’s initial impressions of Ash and the eventual development of his feelings for him. “It’s actually pretty easy being nice to a bitter boy like him. So, I got myself a citrus friend.”
Little Lion Man- Mumford and Sons |Shorter Wong| where Ash is commonly referred to as ‘the Lynx’, I see Shorter as a more of a lion. The song also speaks to his extremely self-critical nature despite being a victim of circumstance. “Weep little lion man, you're not as brave as you were at the start.”
Mostly- Vian Izak |Ash Lynx| this selection comes from the side of Ash we very rarely get to see, an Ash overwhelmed by the break-neck pace of his life and overwrought by his intense fear of lacking control in the grander scheme of things. “I've bought up all my dreams and sold off most my heart. I'd been lying to myself just to bury all my thoughts.”
Revolver- Vian Izak |Ash Lynx| this just might be my favorite song for Ash. It speaks to his progressive exhaustion and his intense need for solace and companionship. “And this war's so overrated... all I need is a piece of the night and for your heart to be in my favor.”
Headrest for my Soul- AWOLNATION |Eiji Okamura| I feel like the dreariness of this song suits Eiji better than it does Ash. It also reminds me just how foreign this constant chaos is to him. “There’s a leak in this boat, someone toss me a rope, and a headrest for my, headrest for my soul.”
R.I.P to my Youth- The Neighborhood |Ash Lynx| it’s no mystery that Ash’s youth was wrenched from his hands before he was old enough to even properly grasp it. The heartbreak is shrouded by an almost resentful yet reassuring tone. “Might be a sinner and I might be a saint— I'd like to be proud, but somehow I'm ashamed.”
I Will Follow You into the Dark- Death Cab for Cutie |Eiji and Ash| this song made me cry way before I related it to these two. I’ll let the lyrics explain my emo tears. “Love of mine, someday you will die— but I'll be close behind and I'll follow you into the dark.”
Goodnight Saigon- Billy Joel |Max Lobo| this is one of my favorites on this list not only because Max is my best boy, but it just fits so well. The song is literally about the Vietnam war, and it does will to illustrate the repressed grief Max holds in for the sake of the other characters. “We came in spastic— like tameless horses. We left in plastic— as numbered corpses.”
Crazy Little Thing Called Love- Queen |Max Lobo| This might be a guilty pleasure thing, but I’m beyond convinced that Max sings this song at the top of his lungs and drives everyone insane. Oh and also he sings ‘Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy’ to Ibe, but that’s another post for another day. “This thing called love, I just can't handle it”
Straight Razor- Matt Maeson |Shorter Wong| again, this one tackles Shorter’s struggle with self-abhorrence and lament. The imagery is what really sells it for me, especially concerning manipulation and such. “I've killed everything but my shame... Oh and I'll try to convince myself I'm worth it.”
Me and my Friends are Lonely- Matt Maeson |Sing Soo-Ling| this song perfectly nails Sing’s grief over Shorter and his internal turmoil when it comes to living up to his image as a leader. “And they took one of our own... They took our innocent home”
Devil Like Me- Rainbow Kitten Surprise |Ash Lynx| Ash is referred to time and time again as the ‘Devil Himself’, and the vibe of this song really resonates with his struggle with this title and other demonizations of him. Silly name, amazing band— I promise. “Is the devil so bad if he cries in his sleep, while the earth turns?”
Sweet Disaster (Acoustic)- DREAMERS |Eiji and Ash| this is the tragic love story that is Ash in Eiji wrapped in a good four minutes of crying. The acoustic version is for extra tears. “You're making it so easy to throw myself away.”
Start a Riot- BANNERS |Eiji and Ash| I really enjoy how the extent of Ash’s passion is portrayed in this song, yet it’s still quite gentle in terms of melody. “In the dark, when you sound the alarm, we'll find each other's arms.”
Sleeping in- The Postal Service |General| domestic bliss. This is the song I go to when I need my delusional reality where everything is fine and not on fire. “Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in— now we can swim any day in November.”
no more time- flor |Eiji Okamura| manga readers, you’ll know why this hurts me. That is all. “If somebody came to haunt me— scare me simply, say "Just one life".”
