My First Article Of 2014, Profiling Brooklyn's Karaoke Legend
Here is my first published article of 2014, a print and video profile of Joe McGinty, a former member of The Psychedelic Furs who now runs a live piano karaoke night at Manhattan Inn in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Excerpt:
Thereâs something quaint about Piano Parlor that drives its appeal. Unlike Koreatownâs karaoke bars with flashing lights, McGintyâs event has no cheesy backing tracks or video screens. Just good old-fashioned lyrics binders. âSometimes I can fake it,â McGinty says of requests for songs not in the books. âThere have been times when Iâve played songs that I havenât even heard before.â He loves music, but not every song. âPeople will ask for âPiano Manâ and I will not do that song,â he says. He also gets tired of âKilling Me Softly,â âTotal Eclipse of the Heart,â and âWannabeâ by the Spice Girls. âA group of girls will go up there and realize they donât remember the words,â he says.

I Profiled A City Council Candidate For Decide NYC
Decide NYC, a website devoted to the 2013 city elections, just published a profile I did on City Council candidate Carlos Menchaca. The candidate defeated an incumbent in the primary and will essentially run unopposed in the general election next month. His victory will be historic, since he will be Brooklyn's first openly gay council member and New York City's first Mexican-American council member, a feat I've previously written about.

Red Hook Film Festival Will Screen "3rd and 3rd" This Saturday
My documentary, At the Corner of 3rd and 3rd, about a neglected Brooklyn landmark and the Whole Foods opening next door, will screen at the Red Hook Film Festival this Saturday, 10/12.
This yearâs festival showcases films that deal with Hurricane Sandy. The hurricane hit Red Hook hard and many residents and business owners are still recovering.
Iâve been spending time in the neighborhood lately for my Columbia Journalism School reporting class.

Here's Some "3rd and 3rd" Coverage Before Tonight's Brooklyn Premiere
Mid-Brooklyn blog Pardon Me For Asking did a nice write-up yesterday of my film, At the Corner of 3rd and 3rd, which has its Brooklyn premiere tonight in Greenpoint! Katia Kelly, who writes the blog and appears in the documentary, has been so helpful throughout the entire process of making and promoting the film.Â
Tonight's premiere also got a mention on Jeremiah's Vanishing New York.
Tickets are still available for tonight. The venue is at 67 West Street, near Transmitter Park and the Greenpoint G stop.
Brooklyn Premiere Of "3rd and 3rd" This Friday
My documentary, At the Corner of 3rd and 3rd, has its Brooklyn premiere this week! The film is showing at the Greenpoint Film Festival on Friday, 9/20, at 6:30pm. I'll be doing a Q&A following the screening.
