Matthew Sweetâs early-90s hit, Girlfriend, is more hit-and-miss than people like to admit, but when it connects, itâs wonderful. âIâve Been Waitingâ remains a classic, seemingly effortless piece of folk pop craftsmanship, while âEvangelineâ and the title track arenât afraid to let Robert Quine whip out the electric guitars and get knotty in raucous improvisations. If you dig this album, I heartily recommend itâs unofficial sister album, Lloyd Coleâs self-titled solo debut, made around the same time with most of the same players and production personnelâincluding Sweet on backing vocals and bass.
