Matthew Sweet’s early-90s hit, Girlfriend, is more hit-and-miss than people like to admit, but when it connects, it’s wonderful. “I’ve Been Waiting” remains a classic, seemingly effortless piece of folk pop craftsmanship, while “Evangeline” and the title track aren’t afraid to let Robert Quine whip out the electric guitars and get knotty in raucous improvisations. If you dig this album, I heartily recommend it’s unofficial sister album, Lloyd Cole’s self-titled solo debut, made around the same time with most of the same players and production personnel—including Sweet on backing vocals and bass.

In the late #noughties or early 00’s, I went to go see #matthewsweet at the @hardrockhotels #thejoint #lasvegas Sweet played for hours! He played so long that the house lights came on after his 4th or 5th encore song. But, no matter what the band played on. Loved it so much!!! As I’m listening to his new lp-Catspaw I felt kind of transported. Those harmonies? Those guitar riffs?! Matthew Sweet has always been an artist that brings out great emotions in me. He still has that magic. Great music by an amazing artist. It’s sunny and breezy today. This picture is almost complete.
