365 DC Comics Paper Cut-Out Villains - One Villain, Every Day, All Year…
JUly 23rd - Ra’s al Ghul
Ra’s al Ghul, رأس الغول or The Demon’s Head is a near-immortal super villain and ecological terrorist who has walked the earth for somewhere around six hundred years. He began as a nomadic physician traveling throughout Northern Africa. He discovered a fissure in the ground and therein a mysterious pool of primordial liquid; and found that bathing in this water restored health and prolonged life. He named this pool ‘The Lazarus Pit’ and has used its restorative properties to maintain his health and vitality for centuries. Ra’s traveled the world, becoming involved in countless historical events, including the fall of The Roman Empire, The French Revolution and The Napoleonic Wars. Through it all he became a fierce warrior and master strategist. As the world entered the modern age and industrialisation began to cover much of the Earth, Ra’s grew to despise the humans who he believed were destroying the world’s natural beauty, thus setting him on a path of eco-terrorism. To aid in his goals to slow industrialization, Ra’s formed The League of Assassins, a secret society of spies, killers and mercenaries completely loyal to Ra’s and his vision. This eventually resulted in numerous altercations with Batman. Ra’s was quite impressed with Batman, so much so that he found him as a suitable heir to marry his daughter, Talia. Although Batman and Talia have been periodically romantically involved, Batman has had no interest in continuing on Ra’s goals and he and Ra’s have remained fierce adversaries. A version of Ra’s al Ghul featured in the movie, Batman Begins, portrayed by actor Liam Neeson; the character has additionally appeared in the television shows Arrow and Gotham, portrayed by Matthew Nable and Alexander Siddig respectively. Ra’s al Ghul first appeared in the pages of Batman #232 (1971).
Outlaws/1% (2017). Directed by Stephen McCallum.

Matthew Nable as R’as al-Ghul/David Cain
Notes: Nable has obviously already been cast as R’as on Arrow; however, since Arrow borrows the Dark Knight Trilogy’s use of Ra’s as a title passed from Head to Head, I am retroactively naming the Nable version of the character as the League of Assassins member David Cain. The Liam Neeson version, who was Henri Ducard, would be his predecessor. This also un-whitewashes the character to an extent. The choice of Cain will make additional sense later on.
Matthew “Matt” Nable – 22/11/15 Adelaide Supanova While Matt’s autograph table was quiet I went up to him to ask if we could do something in our photo because I wasn’t sure how cool Matt would be with me just asking in the photo booth and I had an awesome talk with him. I told him my whole family watched Bikie Wars and that was the show that had us talking to eachother and he asked if I was from Adelaide and I told him I was from Melbourne and then he asked why my mum and dad didn’t come to meet him as well ahahaha. He then told me I had to be the director of the photo and I flat out said no because that would be too much pressure for me so I told him we would direct it together.
So when I went in to get our photo I still had no idea what to do so he told me to punch him and I didn’t know how to do that properly so he taught me how to fake punch and it was amazing.

I was listening to total parent radio (talk back) as I was driving just now and Matt Nable was one of the guests and talking about his struggles with bipolar disorder and depression and his new book ‘Guilt’ (which is apparently brilliant) and the other guest was a well known Australian actor and they started talking about the strange thing of people knowing who you are and he had to explain that he’s on a show in America called ‘Arrow’ that has a really invested fan base and that’s something he has found quite confronting. At which point I finally realised a) I really do listen to parent radio if he’s explaining what Arrow is and b) who he was after thinking his voice sounded familiar because I tell you want, he sounds quite Aussie from time to time on the show but without that slight English lilt he has such a strong Australian accent day to day!
