I’ve been listening to Mat Kearney since I was in high school, and in 2018, I got to see him live. Mat has always combined the lighter sides of pop, rock, folk, and hip-hop with earnest storytelling and lyrical content that can speak to wide range of audiences. On every album it seems Mat has attempted to combine different sonic ideas with the subject matter that he has on the table. On his 5th album, “CRAZYTALK”, Mat focuses in on the sounds of modern pop, hip hop, and EDM, while maintaining some of his usual subjects of writing (love, romance, and commitment, etc.). There’s something about the combination of all of these elements into 3-4 minute songs that comes across as heartwarming and endearing. On “Kings & Queens”, Mat espouses that it doesn’t matter how famous he might become or how many material things that he and his lover have...in fact, those things don’t matter to him anyway. All he cares about is that the love that he and his partner share is rich. The bouncy beat on the hook, and the melody just draw me in even further. I had a lot of jumping up and down to this when I saw him in concert (yes, that’s exactly what I did), and though this one might be a little too light for some of you...I think it’s a great record.
