Crestworth Astro Lantern MK2 (1970s) lava lamp with original "Port" bottle
(Owner of the second picture unknown; please contact me if you know its source!)
MODEL: FLUIDIUM
Brand: Mathmos
Introduced: 2000
Discontinued: 2016
Base and cap colors: white, orange, yellow, green
Wax colors: white, orange, yellow, green
Fluid colors: clear
Size: height 38cm (14.9”), diameter 27.6cm (10.8”)
Introduced in the year 2000 by Mathmos, the Fluidium was created by industrial designer Ross Lovegrove, and it certainly stands out from the brand’s other modern offerings: here we find not a polished metal base but a partially translucent polycarbonate; not the typical variety of wax and fluid colorways we might expect from other lamps (blue and purple, yellow and pink, orange and yellow…) but curated, minimal waxes matching the base and cap’s color submerged in clear fluid. The Fluidium might put one in mind of a rocket as other Mathmos styles aim to, but its silhouette is more abstract, organic. It lives in simplicity.
According to a Mathmos Facebook post, the model’s final production run was in 2016. It can occasionally be found second-hand, usually for $150 to $300. In 2016, the Fluidium retailed for £65.00.

I should re-do this piece. Posting as a reminder to myself to actually get round to that at somepoint!
