Scene X, Take 3: A Gifted Program
Mathieu Morin did not know why these two people were approaching him. He had figured on drinking his coffee and going home in peace, but it was beginning to look like that might not be a possibility anymore.
One of the people was an adult man. He wore a gray jacket and gray pants. His eyes and hair were gray, and his tie â but his shirt was white. His companion was a boy around Mathieuâs age. He was tall and thin, and he sported a blue shirt, a dark gray sweater, and denim jeans. A pair of thin glasses perched on his long nose.Â
The man and the boy stopped in front of Mathieu, and the man said something in English. The boy slid into the seat across from Mathieu, and the man pulled up a third chair.Â
âBonjour,â the boy began. âJe mâappelle Kincaid Montgomery. Vous ĂȘtes Mathieu Morin, nâest-ce pas?â
âOui,â Mathieu agreed warily. The boy turned to the man and said something in English, then returned his attention to Mathieu.
Mathieu shrugged and said, âAlors, demandez.â
âAvez-vous,â Kincaid began, then stopped and took a breath, as if steadying himself.
âQuoi,â Mathieu replied with a smirk, âcomme voler?âÂ
âPouvez-vous voler?â the boy inquired, seriously. Mathieu snorted, but Kincaidâs gaze held steady.Â
    Mathieu gaped at him. âVraiment?âÂ
âOui, peut-ĂȘtre.â He looked Mathieu square in the eyes and raised a hand to his temple.
The boy had just read his thoughts.
    Mathieu said, âJe vole.â
