8 sustainable lessons from my mom
In Poland, we celebrate Mother's Day on May 26 (today) and for this occasion I present to you 8 things my mother taught me about sustainable living.
1. Take care of your stuff.
Everything that you own has its value. You need to take care of your possessions, if you want it to last longer and the goal is to make every item long-lasting.
2. Consumerism isn't the only way of living.
Shopping isn't the way of spending free time, we buy only if we need something. For my mom the best place to spent your free time is outside with those you love.
3. Don't waste your food.
My mom is a master of making delicious and quick meals from what's left in fridge, so that nothing goes to waste. We also have the go to grocery list which helps to avoid buying something that won't be eaten.
4. Car isn't the only option. When you can, take a walk. It's good for your health and for the planet. I remember when she was working on the other side of the city, and she was riding on her bike every day, always happy from additional movement.
5. Recycle.
We're recycling since I was a child, my mum is the one that always reminds us about the importance of well segregated trash.
6. Repair.
Also, she's the one that taught me that not everything that's broken is a trash. She can fix almost everything. She always has some tips on repairing, and she a great believer that we can make a lot by ourselves.
7. Second hand shopping.
My first second hand items I found in her wardrobe. Often I gave them the third life by “borrowing” them. She taught me that it's better to have something unique that to look like everyone else.
8. Love for the nature.
What's most important, she taught me how to be a good human, how to respect the nature and how to connect with the world. Even though I was a very clean child there was no stopping me from playing in the crown of the tree or taking care of animals. She showed me that we as humans are the part of the nature and it's our responsibility to take care of her.
Without that knowledge I would probably have different values in my life and I wouldn't be writing this blog. I'm really greatful for all the lessons from my mother and for all that she gave me. I appreciate her not only today but every day. Show some love to your mom, no matter when you celebrate this beautiful day in you county.
