itās late when matty comes knocking at his door. his family is asleep and he had been downstairs watching tv with it on mute trying to pass the time until he could fall asleep but he hadnāt had much luck in that department lately. he knows logically itās just becoming a father is the reason why, now that he has a whole other person to care of itās hard for him to get a good nightās sleep without thinking about her and if sheās doing okay. heās been slowly nursing the same beer from earlier and when he finishes it he goes and gets another from the fridge. another problem with fatherhood and just generally getting older: his alcohol tolerance has absolutely plummeted. by the second beer he is feeling slightly buzzed but whatās even better is that heās actually getting sleepy. he thinks about maybe turning in until thereās a knock at the door. heās a little shocked, he goes to turn the tv off and turning the porch light on and opening the door to see a very sad looking matty. āhey,ā he says, a little concerned by how late it is. ācome on in, itās cold.ā he opens the door for him and closes the door behind him when he steps through. āwhatās going on?ā gabe reaches out to grab his arm, letting him know that he was there. the room was dark and he only can assume that his thoughts might be too.
matty had kissed him before, and gabe had been okay with it, thinking that maybe that matty needed it, for whatever reason. and gabe would never turn down a kiss, which seemed to be a weird thought now but it was true. he liked matty enough and he wasnāt looking for anything serious and he didnāt know if matty was but he supposed that he should tell him sometime soon that if he was looking for this to go somewhere then it couldnāt. gabe was still a new dad and he still had feelings for his ex that he couldnāt seem to let go of still despite her quite literally ripping his heart in two and leaving them with a kid that she never deserved in the first place. thalia was just too good. for either of them. he shakes out of it, and matty is talking a mile a minute and gabe is trying to calm him down and he brings him closer to him, wrapping an arm around him now and looking him in the eye but itās still dark. he leans in to kiss his eye, he has this very brief memory of his girlfriend doing that to him whenever he seemed worried about something. she would just reach out and kiss his eyes, his temple, his nose, but that seemed too intimate, too many memories with those parts of the body, instead he bends down slightly and kisses the corner of his mouth. not fully kissing him. he doesnāt want to give him the wrong idea. but he wants to be here for him. as a friend. and whatever else that he may need. whether thatās physically or notāmatty seemed to be going through it. āyou will still be someone worth knowing even when he stops noticing.ā
