Marseille. A la Vieille Charité, une expo "Tatouages !" (sur les tatouages, l'utilisation de leurs motifs, les scarifications...)
Constantin-Jean-Marie Prévost - "Deux matelots napolitains se tatouant" - 1830
portrait d'Alfonso Castan Castel, prisonnier - fin XIX- début XXe s.
Matelot
This strange word is an affectionate name for british sailors. Whereas in English it was rather pronounced matloh. Because matelot means sailor in French. And our British sailors will do their best to avoid adopting a French name.Â
Le tatouage du matelot - The tattooing of the sailor, by Constantin Jean Marie Prevost (1796–1865)
It is not to be confused with the English mate, which refers to an assistant, such as boatswain's mate or carpenter's mate. Matelot seems to be derived from mattennoot, the Middle Dutch word for bed mate. I will leave that without comment at this point....Â
