From the little corner of the 'Net that Gregg and I inhabit so frequently, Mat Cothran is the highest order of celebrity.Ā Over the last several years, he's released some of the world's most perfect (and most tragically underappreciated) pop songs as eitherĀ Coma Cinema, Gremlins, or Elvis DepressedlyāwhoseĀ holo pleasuresĀ Ā hit the virtual shelves of Bandcamp today.Ā
Cothran lends himself easily to hyperbole, so I'll try to keep it #based for a minute:Ā holo pleasuresĀ is the most mature Elvis Depressedly release to date. It's the first time he's written alongside a full band; and whether because of that or not, the technical instrumentation is fuller and more involvedāI'd go so far as to call it "smooth" and "lush." Lyrically he's always operated on a plane higher than most, but now he sounds less beholden to his id, and more capable than ever to contextualize it. This record is great.
Holo Pleasures is marked as Pay What You Want because that's how Mat rolls, but you can buy the 7" via Birdtapes (in either blood red or swamp green) and the cassette via Orchid Tapes. Don't know whether it should be considered a miscommunication or just a matter of fate, but Gregg and I both got the blood red.
