The travelling exhibition People Make Places invites members of the public to express how they feel about the cities they inhabit, within the tiny confines of a matchbox. Conceived by visual artists and identical twins Leanne and Naomi Shedlezki, the project has travelled to major cities such as Edinburgh, Melbourne, Sydney and Berlin, amassing over 2000 matchboxes along the way. The entries the project has yielded are incredibly idiosyncratic; it’s amazing how much creativity can be crammed into a humble matchbox. They’re filled with miniature dioramas depicting local landmarks and individual escapades, odds and ends of train ticket stubs, souvenirs and collages made from local leaflets— tiny building blocks of cities that reflect the vibrance, quirkiness and diversity of the urban experience.
