10. What is their main character arc in the story? Where do they start and how do they develop? Do they get a happy ending or is their story a tragic one?
As for his start, he found his 'soulmate' as a sapling - they were both very young, but very certain that they were The One for one another. He didn't just love this man, he idolized him. Sought his praise in everything, would have done anything if it was him that asked, looked to him for guidance. An unhealthy devotion, even if they both considered it innocent enough at the time. When this man, who he had built himself around, was tortured and killed by the nightmare court, there was no way he could ever have handled that healthily (not that it's an easy thing to handle, losing a loved one in such a way). He wanted vengeance under the title of justice, and when his mentors in the grove tried to hold him back, he wouldn't listen. When word of what he'd done to that court afterwards made its way to the grove, the response wasn't very...understanding. So Syn felt their platitudes and pretend nobility was a bunch of useless self-importance with no point and turned his back on the Dream and its teachings - ironically, finding himself pulled into Nightmare specifically through his grievances against its Court. He wasn't going to go crawling back to the grove pretending he was sorry for what he'd done though, so he just...started his own sect within the court. A branch very far removed from most other circles, and one whose members had no qualms with hunting down other courtiers, should it feel justified.
How infuriating it must be for other dukes that between his effectiveness as a recruiter and deadly prowess he's nearly untouchable.
After the steaming hot mess that was HoT, the court's leadership and very structure was a haphazard mess, which allowed him to more fully withdraw from the larger politics of Nightmare.
regarding an 'end' for his story, I've never really come up with one - to be honest, I usually don't like tying things off with my characters very much! I will say though that his story isn't a happy one. If he ever were to bring back his lost beloved, Syn would be unrecognizable, even repulsive, to him. I think that's something he knows deep in his heart, but he also feels like there's no point in changing.
14. Do you have any quotes tied to the character, either from the story itself or from another source that fit them?
Not really, honestly. I'm sure there are some good ones out there, though! (a slightly silly answer would be that part at the beginning of season 3 of breaking bad where jesse talks about accepting himself for who he is as 'the bad guy', but that's not exactly a quote.)
While the animorphs quote about ruthlessness is one I hold dear to my heart, and the tone of the quote is similar to how he things, the substance is not. He is cruel, and he knows it, and he doesn't care.
