From Biondi Santi to Mastrojanni: a few thoughts on mergers & acquisitions
The day we’re invited to Biondi Santi we also manage to organise a visit to Mastrojanni in the afternoon. The two estates are not far from one another, in fact they share the same south-east slope and can be accessed via the same road from Montalcino to Castelnuovo dell’Abate.
𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶 𝗕𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼 𝗱𝗶 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗩𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮 𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗼 - 𝗗𝗢𝗖𝗚 Các trái nho 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗼 sau khi được thu hoạch tại vườn sẽ được vận chuyển về nhà máy, tách bỏ cuống rồi cho vào hệ thống ép. Hỗn hợp nước ép nho sau đó được lên men, ủ trong những chiếc thùng gỗ sồi khoảng 3 năm và khoảng 6 - 8 tháng trong chai trước khi đưa ra thị trường. 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶 𝗕𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼 𝗱𝗶 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗩𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮 𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗼 có màu đỏ ruby đậm quyến rũ. Rượu vang có hương ngào ngạt của trái cây như anh đào, mâm xôi, mận đen chính đỏ cùng các loài hoa và các loại lá thơm như cam thảo, vani, hạt tiêu. Khi thưởng thức sẽ cảm nhận rõ nét vị tròn trịa, đầy đặn nồng nàn trong khoang miệng, tannin mềm mượt, ngọt ngào với dư vị kéo dài. Rượu vang uống ngon nhất ở 16 - 18 độ. Trước khi thưởng thức, vang nên được khuyên ướp trong xô đá khoảng một vài tiếng và mở nắp chai trước 30 phút. Hãy kết hợp 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶 𝗕𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼 𝗱𝗶 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗩𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮 𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗼 với một vài món ăn từ thịt đỏ, thịt nướng, phô mai hay socola để bữa ăn trở nên hoàn hảo hơn. And in those years, only a few entered the wine-making adventure in Montalcino.Today, thanks to an exceptional terroir and men who have believed in it for decades, Mastrojanni has become one of the most respected Montalcino producers as far as wine buffs are concerned.
Mastrojanni is an estate that is living a true moment of glory. The new winery has been up and running for a number of years, the best vineyard sites are in their prime production years and a slew of interesting additions (such as a charming on-site country hotel) are about to go online. The Illy family (of the famed coffee house) bought the property in 2008 and made a series of important investments. The cellars were completely renewed. Managing Director Andrea Machetti stayed on during the many years of transition and his role has been crucial to the continuity and the improvements made at Mastrojanni since the Illy ownership commenced. The wine ages in oak for 18 months and consequently delivers a full offering of aromas that spans from bright cherry fruit to exotic spice. I'm adding my name to a long list of their fans. The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is a classic expression of Sangiovese with soft lines and enduring flavors. You do feel some of the vintage heat, but the ripeness is contained thanks to the delicate and nuanced nature of its fruit. It also shows enormous grace in the mouth. The wine is silky and svelte with long, polished tannins. Mastrojanni's wines are linked by a common characteristic that is easy to identify in most vintages. This single vineyard that exists on a slope adjacent to the winery has absorbed more of the 2011 summer heat. You feel that warmth in the quality of the fruit on display here. The bouquet is redolent of ripe cherry, plum, cassis, leather and spice. The finish is opulent and round. This is a fine medium-term Brunello that is approachable now. 92 WINE ADVOCATE
