The day we’re invited to Biondi Santi we also manage to organise a visit to Mastrojanni in the afternoon. The two estates are not far from one another, in fact they share the same south-east slope and can be accessed via the same road from Montalcino to Castelnuovo dell’Abate.

MASTROJANNI HAS BEEN WRITING HISTORY WITH ITS WINES SINCE 1975, COLLECTING AWARDS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD.

And in those years, only a few entered the wine-making adventure in Montalcino.Today, thanks to an exceptional terroir and men who have believed in it for decades, Mastrojanni has become one of the most respected Montalcino producers as far as wine buffs are concerned.

Mastrojanni is an estate that is living a true moment of glory. The new winery has been up and running for a number of years, the best vineyard sites are in their prime production years and a slew of interesting additions (such as a charming on-site country hotel) are about to go online. The Illy family (of the famed coffee house) bought the property in 2008 and made a series of important investments. The cellars were completely renewed. Managing Director Andrea Machetti stayed on during the many years of transition and his role has been crucial to the continuity and the improvements made at Mastrojanni since the Illy ownership commenced. Sku: 69227 SAN PIO 2012 List. $37.99 Sale $32.99 A blend of 20% Sangiovese and 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2012 San Pio is a hearty and approachable red wine that would taste great next to a succulent cut of beef. The wine ages in oak for 18 months and consequently delivers a full offering of aromas that spans from bright cherry fruit to exotic spice. There are some budding tertiary tones of cola and crushed mineral as well that add complexity. The finish is firm and long-lasting. 91 WINE ADVOCATE

Sku: 69228 ROSSO DI MONTALCINO 2014 List $32.99 Sale $27.99 The 2014 Rosso di Montalcino is lean in texture and light in color. Like many of the wines from this vintage, it shows less intensity overall. But it does offer a steady stream of wild berry, cola and cherry aromas that are characteristic of Sangiovese. The finish offers tangy acidity and more easy fruit flavors. WINE ADVOCATE

Sku: 69229 BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2011 List $70.99 Sale $59.99 Mastrojanni is on a roll. This extraordinary estate has been enjoying the spotlight lately and very much deserves the attention. I'm adding my name to a long list of their fans. The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is a classic expression of Sangiovese with soft lines and enduring flavors. You do feel some of the vintage heat, but the ripeness is contained thanks to the delicate and nuanced nature of its fruit. It also shows enormous grace in the mouth. The wine is silky and svelte with long, polished tannins. Mastrojanni's wines are linked by a common characteristic that is easy to identify in most vintages. Sku: 69230 BRUNELLO VIGNA LORETO 2011 List $99.99 Sale $84.99 The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Loreto offers a bright berry bouquet and soft richness in the mouth. This single vineyard that exists on a slope adjacent to the winery has absorbed more of the 2011 summer heat. You feel that warmth in the quality of the fruit on display here. The bouquet is redolent of ripe cherry, plum, cassis, leather and spice. The finish is opulent and round. This is a fine medium-term Brunello that is approachable now. 92 WINE ADVOCATE
