This is not a fever dream. Your eyes are not deceiving you. I'm finally posting after months of inactivity. I'm so sorry, y'all!
âCareful, careful. If you open those stitches, weâre too far from a hospital to have them fixed and you do not want me playing doctor on you.â I warned Taehyung as he swung his legs out of the backseat of Minhyukâs van.
âIâm not worried. Kook could probably do a decent enough job.â
I rolled my eyes. âThatâs not the point. Now head inside. Choose a room on the bottom floor. No climbing stairs. And get in bed. Iâll come in to check on you as soon as everything settles.â
I ignored his grumbling, giving Jin a not-so-subtle head nod in Taehyungâs direction, letting him know he needed to follow to make sure he did as I asked. With a quick salute, Jin was on it, tossing Taehyungâs arm over his own shoulders for support as they awkwardly lumbered towards the front door. Blowing a few errant strands of hair out of my face, I walked around the back of the van, popping the trunk. We had pulled some strings and made a couple of half-baked promises to get Taehyung discharged sooner rather than later. And while we couldnât exactly keep our word for him to be under the care of another medical professional, I could at least make sure he was kept on strict bed rest for the next several days.
I grabbed one of the suitcases that Minhyuk had kindly packed for everyone. It was scarce for now, only being able to take a few pairs of clothes per person, which for eight people total, meant more bags than usual. Apart from that, Minhyuk had made sure everything else would already be stocked in the house. A hand wrapped around mine, taking the luggage from me.
âIâve got it.â Namjoon reassured me, reaching for another suitcase.
I let him have it, not surprised when he was closely followed by Jungkook with the widest smile plastered on his lips.
âMe too.â He grunted, snagging two bags and then attempting to slip a third one under his arm.
âJungkook, let me-â
âI got it! Donât worry!â
I bit my lip to smother my laugh as I watched him waddle towards the porch, the suitcase under his arm slowly slipping even as he rushed his way through the yard. Hoseok was next, grabbing two himself and leaving Jimin with the last one. Both of them gave me excited smiles before rushing to catch up with the others. Sighing, I pulled the hatch to the van closed just as Minhyuk rounded the corner of it.
âKeys.â He tossed me a ring with three keys on it. âOne for the house, one for the shed in the back, and another for the truck over there. Try not to take the truck anywhere unless you absolutely have to. The house is fully stocked and weâll make drops every month, so try to make things last until then.â
âDo you really think weâll be stuck here for months?â
Min shrugged, casting a look towards the farmhouse.
âI hope not, but Iâd rather be prepared for the worst-case scenario. Iâm on it, Y/N. Donât worry.â
âI know, itâs just⌠Iâm not one to hide.â
He gave me a rueful smile.
âI know. Donât think about it as hiding though. Think about it like youâre babysitting.â
I cocked a brow. âBabysitting? Thatâs not much better. Theyâre grown ass men.â
âWell, grown ass men who have been locked up for who knows how long. Youâre introducing them back to the world theyâve missed since being in there. It could be exciting.â
I grimaced. If this was me babysitting, I was the worldâs worst babysitter. I mean, I slept with one of them and another watched. Not really babysitter behavior. Clearing my throat, I gave Min a nod.
âThanks anyway. It may not seem like it, but I do appreciate your help. Take care out there.â
âTake care, Y/N. See you in a month.â
I didnât comment on the set timeline. I knew better than probably anyone how elusive Jongsu is. Hell, it took me months undercover to even find my way into the ring in the first place, so for me to place my hope in Minhyuk and the rest of the precinct resolving this in a matter of days would be unfair. We said our goodbyes and I watched Min drive back down the way we came, the van kicking up dust from the gravel until I couldnât see it anymore. I stood there quietly, letting my new reality sink in. Here I was, never having interacted with a hybrid besides brief pleasantries prior to this whole cluster fuck, to living with seven of them. I turned toward the house, gaze colliding with Yoongiâs who stood in the front doorway. His arms were crossed, his spotted tail giving two quick flicks in succession before turning around and heading back into the house.
Faintly, I could hear excited chatter from within. As bummed as I was being thrown into hiding, I had to admit the location wasnât awful. Different from the city I was used to, quiet and isolated, but homely. The two-story farmhouse held a lot of windows, pale yellow shutters framing them, a huge wooden wrap-around porch big enough for several chairs to line the length of it, but right now it only held three and a small table between them to the left of the cream-colored front and screen door. Yeah. It would take some getting used to. Gripping the set of keys in my hand, I trudged up the steps and through the door only to stop short at the scene I stumbled upon.
âUm⌠what is this?â
Three pairs of ears swiveled in my direction before their heads followed. Jimin and Jungkook paused in the middle of a giant comforter they had been about to toss on top of the enormous pile of blankets and pillows in the center of the living room. Hoseok gave me one of his signature bright smiles and shrugged.
âNone of the rooms were big enough for all of us to stay in, so weâre making a den out here.â
âBut wouldnât you all be more comfortable in a room?â
At that moment, Namjoon appeared with another armful of blankets.
âWeâre used to sleeping with each other. It doesnât really matter where as long as weâre all together.â
He dropped his bounty onto the pallet before turning to me.
âI made sure to tell them to leave the master bedroom alone for you. Feel free to take it. We did steal everything from the other rooms though, so if youâd rather stay somewhere else, you may want to take the linens with you.â
âOh, well, the master is fine. If youâre sure.â
âWeâre sure.â Yoongi huffed, brushing past me.
He waltzed past me and the living room towards the kitchen, disappearing around the corner at the same time Jinâs pink hair popped out of a nearby hallway with Taehyung in tow. I moved to help him lead Tae into the living room and onto one of the couches.
âI think Taehyung should at least be moved to a bed.â
âGood luck convincing him of that.â Jin gave me a wry grin.
âIâm not sure the floor is a good place for him to be so soon after surgery.â
âDonât worry.â Jungkook said, tossing a pillow onto the couch beside Tae. âHeâll stay on the couch. Iâll make sure of it.â
I wanted to argue, but I wasnât confident anything I had to say would fall on anything but deaf ears. Clearly, they all felt more comfortable being around one another. I couldnât necessarily blame them for that, and I wouldnât force anyone to separate. As odd as it seemed to me, I wasnât a hybrid. And I wouldnât judge them just because I didnât understand it either. Jin grabbed my hand, tugging me in the direction of the hall he and Taehyung had just come from.
âCome on, Iâll show you the master bedroom.â
Without a word, I followed, letting him lead me and leaving the forming den in the living room behind. The short hallway only had a few doors in it. The first door on the left side being a bathroom. Jin led me further down to two doors facing opposite each other. He opened the right one, revealing a large bedroom containing a lone dresser, a single bookcase, a large king size bed with a wooden bedframe and white bedcovers, and another door to the far-right side of the room.
âWe figured it would be better for you to have this room because itâs the biggest, but it also has a bathroom attached to it. We thought you would appreciate having some privacy.â
I couldnât help but smile. Despite the weird situation we all found ourselves in, they were still trying to be considerate.
âThanks, Jin.â
âWe should be thanking you. Because of you, weâre out of that awful place.â
I turned my head towards him, noticing the way his shoulders moved with a heavy, silent sigh before slowly turning his head to meet my gaze.
âI know this isnât the best situation. Living with seven hybrids, male hybrids at that, that you barely know canât be easy. I promise weâll try to do our best to make you feel comfortable. Iâm sure this wasnât what you planned to happen when you saved us and that youâre a victim of circumstance as much as we are. But I want you to know that we all have immense respect for you.â
I stared at him. âWell, Iâm not sure about that. I can think of at least one person under this roof who probably hates my guts.â
Jin grinned, a soft chuckle escaping him.
âBelieve it or not, Yoongi respects you too. Heâs not very honest with his feelings but trust me. Heâs struggling with the guilt of not being able to protect us, you included. Youâve practically been accepted as part of the pack at this point whether he likes it or not.â
âWhat does that mean exactly? Me being part of the pack, I mean. I donât have a lot of experience with hybrids, but I know that itâs important to the seven of you. I just donât know how I fit in.â
Jin looked away nervously, one hand coming up to fidget with his rounded ears.
âYouâre one of us, more or less. Namjoon may not have made it official, but I know he recognizes you as part of our pack. I do too. It means we want to take care of you like we do each other. Youâve become important to us.â
âOh⌠well, I appreciate that.â
Internally, I cringed. Ugh, that made me sound utterly ungrateful. I turned fully towards Jin.
âI may not know much about you guys right now, but in the time weâll spend together, Iâll try to learn as much as I can. Iâm glad you think of me as part of you guys now, but Iâm sure itâs hard on you all too, living with practically a stranger. Letâs do our best to make the most of this, yeah?â
Jin smiled. âOf course. If you need anything, weâre all right downstairs. Get some sleep. We can figure out everything else tomorrow.â
âThanks, Jin.â
His pink hair rustled, the only indication of the little wiggle his bear ears gave as he backed away.
âGood night, Y/N.â He gave a shy wave and darted out of the open door.
âGood night.â I called after him.
I closed the bedroom door, but didnât bother locking it. Part of me didnât think any of them would invite themselves into my room without permission. I glanced around the room again, noting my singular suitcase placed beside the ensuite bathroom. Grabbing it, I proceeded to unpack it, needing something to do to calm my racing thoughts. It would only be a few months. Minhyuk and the rest of the department were the best at their jobs. Theyâd be able to find Jongsu and bring him down before too long. It would be fine.

Almost a full 24-hours came and went before Taehyung was awake and coherent. By that time Yoongi had been given a full release from his own doctor and spent a majority of his time in Taehyungâs room. Though I never really considered myself as the type to hold grudges against anyone, I found myself purposely avoiding the room for that reason. The last thing I wanted was to be dragged into another argument with Yoongi while Taehyung was still recovering. That wasnât to say I didnât run into him at all. Occasionally weâd pass each other when heâd be kicked out so a few of the others could spend time with their fellow packmate.
It was unfortunate that the hospital staff only allowed so many visitors at once and theyâd all been taking turns. A pack of seven that had been used to sharing close quarters for so long and now they werenât. Iâd spent the last day and a half wandering the hospital halls, unsure really about what to do with myself. As much as I wanted to go home, Minhyuk decidedly took that option off the table. Jongsu was still in the wind. Not a single soul having seen or heard of his whereabouts which pretty much threw my hopes of him being caught relatively quickly out of the window. My second option was trying to convince Minhyuk to let me join the manhunt, but that suggestion was also dashed shortly after being spoken into existence.
It was no secret that Namjoon and his pack would need to go into hiding and theyâd need help to do that. It just so happens that I know how to disappear (courtesy of my life as a PI) and, coincidentally enough, Iâm the only person the seven of them seem to remotely trust outside of themselves. Well, most of them anyway. Yoongi may be up for debate if the contempt looks he keeps throwing me are anything to go by. I sighed heavily, dropping my head back against the wall behind me. Iâd managed to find a somewhat quiet corner, though the hospital still buzzed with life. I couldnât completely drown out the muffled conversations and hurried footsteps any more than I could escape the potent scent of antiseptic that permeated the air.
The double doors to this wing of the hospital swung open with a mechanical whir, drawing my attention before a familiar figure waltzed through them, looking as unbothered as ever. He took several steps down the hall before he caught sight of me out of the corner of his eye and changed trajectory, heading right for me.
âGoing crazy yet?â Minhyuk grinned.
âYou know sitting idly by is the worst form of torture for me.â I grumbled, dropping my gaze to the manila envelope in his hand. âWhatâs that?â
He glanced down at it before offering it up. âYour new assignment.â
I cocked a brow, pushing myself off the wall and taking it from him. Settling back into my seat, I popped the rubber band off the seal, sliding the thick stack of papers from it.
âYouâve got to be kidding me. Of all the places, you picked this one?â
Minhyuk shrugged, taking the seat next to me. âFinding a place capable of housing eight of you at one time left us with limited options. This location is remote and can sustain all of you until we find Jongsu.â
âRemote?â I scoff. âMin, this place is in the middle of fucking nowhere.â
âThe way I see it, it makes it easier to hide you all.â
I let the papers slip back into the envelope with a plop, dropping it into my lap in the next second. I couldnât argue the logic, but that didnât mean I liked the decision. The property weâd be going to wasnât labeled a farm, but thatâs essentially what it was. Miles and miles of land separating it from anything close to being called a town. Weâd truly be isolated so far from civilization. Good for hiding, but sucks for someone like me who doesnât exactly thrive being so far removed from the life Iâd established for myself.
âWeâll make drops every couple of weeks. Mostly just the necessities. Someone maintained the gardens well enough that you shouldnât have to worry about food. Iâll send someone in to clean up the place for your arrival and the plan is to have you all there as soon as Taehyung is discharged.â
âAnd then? How long are we expected to stay there?â
The look Minhyuk gave me was sympathetic. âYou know I donât have an answer to that.â
âDo you have any leads?â
âWeâre looking.â
That means no. I picked up the envelope, tossing it onto a table beside me stacked with magazines.
âY/N, if the situation was different, I would let you back on the case, but right now, I canât guarantee your safety any more than I can guarantee the safety of the seven of them. The best I can do is keep you all out of trouble and try to wrap this up as quickly as I can.â
âI know, Min.â I sighed in exasperation. âIâm not mad, I just⌠this whole operation got so fucking messy.â
The silence between us was heavy. Both of us agreeing with my words, but neither of us knew what to say or do about it. After a long pause, Minhyuk reached out and laid his hand on my shoulder, giving me a reassuring squeeze.
âIt has, but I know you well enough to believe that youâll get through it. You always do.â
âY/NâŚâ
My head snapped up at the call of my name, eyes meeting the carefully calculating gaze of Jungkook as it flicked between Minhyuk and I. The black tip of his tail swept behind him lazily, both ears protruding out of his light hair facing me.
âHey.â I greeted him as Minhyuk let go of me to stand. âHowâs Taehyung?â
Jungkook watched my friend, only dragging his gaze back to me when I gathered the envelope Iâd discarded a minute ago and stood as well.
âGood. Heâs asking for you.â
âMe?â I asked, surprised.
Minhyuk cleared his throat, scratching the back of his head awkwardly.
âIâll, uh, go speak with his doctor so we can make sure his discharges are in order.â
At my nod, Jungkook stepped aside, allowing Minhyuk to pass though the tension between the two of them didnât dissipate. It was subtle, my only hints being the sudden awkwardness from Minhyuk and the stiffness in Jungkookâs stance. I paused in front of the hybrid, giving him a bemused glance as Minhyuk booked it down the hall.
âWhat is it?â
Jungkook finally looked away from the retreating figure to me, his brows pinching together.
âIs he always like that?â
âLike what?â
âSo⌠handsy?â
âHandsy?â I repeated, thoroughly confused now.
Jungkook tapped his own shoulder. âHe was touching you.â
âOh, that. He wasnât being-â I cut myself off. âHe was comforting me.â
Now Jungkook appeared even more confused, his expressive dark gaze peering into me as if he was trying to figure me out.
âIf you needed comfort, why didnât you come to us?â
âIâm sorry?â
Jungkook took one step towards me, his hands gripping my shoulders.
âIt may not be official yet, but as far as Iâm concerned, youâre part of our pack now Y/N. If something bothers you, you can come to any of us. Namjoon is a great listener and problem solver. Or Hobi, he always makes us feel better. Or you can come to me, Iâm a great cuddler.â
I couldnât help the smile snaking its way onto my face as he continued to rattle off the perks of each member.
âJungkook, are you trying to pitch your pack to me?â
âSort of.â He admits, giving me a sheepish grin. âBut Iâm also being serious. Iâd like it if you came to us with your worries. Youâre important to us.â
I tried to quell the sudden delightful ache my heart found itself clutched in. It wouldnât do me any good growing attached to them. For now, I was tasked with making sure we were all safe, at least until Jongsu was caught. After that, Iâd most likely go back to my job while the seven of them integrated themselves back into a world theyâd been missing out on for years. And while Jungkook might consider me as one of them, the truth was, I wasnât. I never would be. Hybrid and human dynamics were different, even I understood that with my limited knowledge of them.
Our arrangement was only temporary. And they only felt this way because I helped them out of an awful situation. As much as I hated to think about it in that way, itâs the truth. I forced a half-hearted smile on my lips as I took Jungkookâs hands off my shoulders. The truth might be obvious to me, but it wasnât to him. Now wasnât the time to get into though. Right now, we had bigger issues. Taehyungâs recovery being first and foremost followed by getting them somewhere safe and far away from Jongsu.
Sorry this took so much longer than I intended it to. The week this was supposed to be posted was hell and then I kept writing and writing and nowhere felt good to leave off. Anyway, because of that, this chapter is a little longer than usual. Enjoy!
âLeave it to you to make what was supposed to be an easy in-and-out complicated.â Minhyuk sighed, tossing his helmet into the ambulance behind me.
He eyed the already forming bruise around my abdomen until I pulled my shirt over it again. It hurt like hell, my shoulder in no better shape, but the paramedic was relatively sure Iâd be fine. That reassurance was enough for me as I was itching to get back inside to find Namjoon and Hoseok. Under Minâs insistence, I had to be checked out first and given the all clear before he allowed me to do anything else. Taehyung was transported to the nearest hospital shortly after we were led out of the facility, Jimin going with him after hearing that Yoongi had been taken there too. Jin had gone with Yoongi, leaving Jungkook as the only other one besides the missing red panda and lion, his instincts still on high alert right next to me while his eyes remained glued to the buildingâs entrance in hopes his older packmates would be the next ones to walk through it.
âYeah, well, someoneâs got to keep things interesting in your life.â I grunted, jumping off the edge of the ambulance truck bed.
Jungkookâs gaze flit to me, quickly standing as I did, as eager to head back in as me.
âYou alright?â Min asked, giving me a once over to confirm for himself.
âIâll be feeling it for days to come, but itâs not anything I canât handle. Any luck with Namjoon and Hoseok?â
Right on cue, Jungkookâs posture shifted, his rounded ears pointing in the direction of the doors seconds before he broke into a dead sprint. His name lodged in my throat as I turned my attention that way. Jooheon emerged first, rolling the massive metal sliding door to the warehouse open a bit further to allow another stretcher through. A brief bout of panic struck me, my eyes darting between the group of medics to see who was on it. It abated somewhat after realizing the man being wheeled towards another ambulance wasnât one of the pack members, but the guard who attacked me and I had last seen fighting with Namjoon.
I whipped my head back towards the doors, releasing a deep breath seeing the two missing hybrids walk out the doors next, side by side. I sagged in relief seeing the two of them relatively unharmed, apart from the obviously busted lip Namjoon sported and their disheveled clothes and hair. Jungkook launched himself into Namjoonâs embrace, the pack leader welcoming the contact while simultaneously attempting make sure the youngest was unhurt. The sight was heartwarming, a part of me happy that I was able to get them out of there, now I wanted to make sure the seven of them were reunited with one another.
As much as I desired to check on them myself, I allowed them their moment together, my attention turning back to Minhyuk who had been watching them just as I had.
âDid your men find Jongsu?â
Minâs head turned to me, the shake of his head deflating the small bit of happiness I held.
âNo. Heâs gone. We didnât hardly find any of the guards either, Iâm assuming they had some sort of escape route in place that we just havenât found yet. Weâre working on releasing the other hybrids they left behind.â
âWhatâs going to happen to them?â
He turned contemplative, crossing his arms over his chest.
âWeâll most likely send them to a secure location, just to be safe. Same with the ones you were with. It would be in their best interest, and yours, if you all laid low for a while until we find Jongsu.â
âYou want to send me to witness protection too?â I asked surprised.
âI donât really think you have a choice Y/N. Jongsu will come after you. Iâd rather be as prepared as we can be in that case, wouldnât you?â
âY/NâŚâ
I turned at the call of my name, Namjoon having been able to peel Jungkook off him approached Minhyuk and I cautiously, his eyes darting between the two of us as he came to my side.
âAre you okay?â
I melted under his concern, his worry-filled chocolate gaze searching for my answer before I could provide it.
âAs good as I can be under the circumstances.â I shrugged. âWhat about you? That looks like it hurts.â
I tapped my lower lip in the same spot his was split, his features turning confused as he brought his hand up, wincing when he made contact with the wound as if he hadnât even known it was there.
âAh, well, good news is that other than my lip, Iâm fine.â
âYou sure? I can have one of the medics check you out just to be safe.â Minhyuk suggested.
Namjoon shook his head, giving as much of a polite smile he could without irritating his cut.
âI appreciate the offer, but I think Iâd feel a lot better if I could be taken to the rest of my pack instead.â
âIâll have a car brought around for the three of you.â Min promised, reaching for his phone.
âFour.â
Minhyuk paused, turning his attention back to Namjoon. âFour?â He repeated.
Bewildered, I ran a quick count in my head, unsure who else Namjoon could be referring to since they would already be at the hospital. Namjoon nodded once, his head tilting slightly in my direction though his eyes never left Min.
âI want Y/N with us.â
âMe?â
âYes.â Namjoon stated simply, shifting his gaze to me. âI think all of us would feel a little more comfortable having you nearby. Besides, Iâm worried it may throw Yoongi into a panic if he wakes up and canât find you.â
âWhoâs Yoongi?â Minhyuk questioned.
âOur snow leopard.â
âOkay, and why would he panic if Y/N isnât there?â
Namjoon opened his mouth to answer, but my hand found purchase on his forearm before he spoke.
âIâll⌠explain later.â I interrupted him, hoping the grimace I gave Minhyuk came off as a smile more than the awkward twist of expression it felt like.
I could tell Minhyuk didnât appreciate not knowing exactly what that meant. The look in his eyes was familiar, one Iâd seen on many occasions when he knew he wasnât going to like what I had to say. Thankfully, I was spared the incoming lecture by an uneasy Hoseok, his tail puffed out as he helped himself to the spot next to me opposite of Namjoon, concern marring his normally unbothered countenance.
âAre you alright?â
I nodded, giving him a reassuring smile. âIâve already been checked out and given the okay. What about you?â
A relieved smile lifted his lips, some of that radiance I associated with him returning.
âNot even a scratch.â
Grateful that I had one less injured pack member to worry over, my thoughts shifted to the one I knew was critically injured and the other I had last seen totally unconscious. Out of the corner of my eye, Namjoon tried to keep his fidgeting to a minimum, but I knew that if I was itching to make sure Taehyung and Yoongi were alright, he probably felt those feelings ten-fold.
âMin. We can figure out the specifics later, but Iâm sure Namjoon as well as the other two would feel much better if we could get to the hospital as soon as possible.â
Reluctantly, Minhyuk agreed, calling someone to bring a car around. Unsurprisingly, Jungkook was the first inside, followed by Hoseok while Namjoon stood by patiently for the two of them to settle. His head turned towards me, the slight tilting gesture telling me he was waiting on me. Before I could join them, Minhyuk stopped me, giving Namjoon a tight-lipped smile as he pulled me a few feet away.
âIâll come pick you up when Iâm done here, so donât leave the hospital, alright?â
âAlright.â
âAnd get checked out while youâre there.â
âMin, the paramedic alrea-â
âThe paramedics arenât doctors. Iâd feel better if youâre cleared by a doctor.â
I sighed under my breath, head already nodding in agreement.
âI will.â
âIâll see you soon.â
I hugged him, happy to be seeing him again after the time I spent in that prison. He squeezed me in his embrace, the affectionate gesture not lasting more than a couple of seconds with neither of us being big on physical touch. We parted, the two of us exchanging mock salutes as he retreated to finish his job. I watched him go, part of me tempted to stay just so I could join him in his hunt for Jongsu, but a much larger part of me wanted to make sure Taehyung was okay. I turned around, meeting Namjoonâs patience with a renewed sense of urgency.
âLetâs go.â
To say the hospital was busy was an understatement. It seems the seven hybrids Iâd come to know in the short time Iâd been kidnapped werenât the only ones to be transported to the nearest hospital. Several different species packed the lobby upon our arrival, some of whom looked physically okay, while others were plainly obvious the abuse they endured. I swallowed hard at the sight, feeling sick to my stomach that the man responsible for their suffering was still at liberty.
âYou find Jimin and Taehyung and Iâll find Jin and Yoongi?â I suggested, glancing at Namjoon.
He nodded, feet already rushing down the hall with Jungkook on his heels. I turned to Hoseok; a bit surprised to see he wasnât following the other two.
âIâm with you.â
âWorks for me.â
Since I didnât have the ability to smell or sense or whatever it was that hybrids did to locate each other, I beelined for the nursesâ station. Though I was sure Hoseok probably could have saved me the trouble.
âExcuse me?â I called out to the frazzled nurse collecting the mountain of patient sheets sprawled across the counter. âWeâre looking for a snow leopard hybrid. He may have been unconscious when he was brought in.â
âAre you family?â
âIâm his packmate.â Hoseok answered.
The nurse took one quick look over Hoseok, but didnât question him. She turned to her computer, quickly scanning through her screen before nodding.
âWe moved him to isolation under doctorâs orders. Youâre allowed to go back, but Iâm not sure if theyâll allow you to see him.â
âWhy did they move him?â I frowned.
âAnother hybrid that came in with him requested it. He said it would be better for him to wake up somewhere with fewer people and less noise.â
That was probably a good call on Jinâs part. I thanked her, about to leave before quickly turning back.
âOh, actually, there was another hybrid transported via ambulance. Heâs also a packmate of ours, a tiger. Could you tell me his condition?â
A soft brush over my calf caught my attention, my eyes dropping down as the nurse turned to check her patient log again. The striped, fluffy tail responsible for the caress made pointed, lazy thumps against my leg, my eyes traveling up the appendage to Hoseokâs sparkling gaze.
âWhat is it?â
He took a step closer, invading my space as his torso pressed into my side.
âYou said âoursâ.â He murmured, keeping his voice low enough for only me to hear.
âYeahâŚ?â I confirmed, a little confused.
âHeâs in surgery right now.â The nurse informed us, my focus snapping back to her. âDoctors stabilized him before going in, but he was rushed in for emergency surgery right after.â
Though I had witnessed the extent of his injury, the information was still like a punch to the gut. I could feel the growing anxiety rolling off Hoseok next to me as he absorbed what we were being told as well. Quickly, I tamped mine down, trying my best to keep from making things worse for him in case my rising concern amplified his.
âOkay, thank you. Would it be possible for me to be notified when heâs out?â
âOf course, just fill this out for me.â She rummaged through the enormous about of paper littering the area around her for a clipboard before handing it to me. âYou only need to fill in the emergency contact portion since I have the patient demographics already. Iâll attach your contact info to his file.â
âI donât have a cell on me. Is there a way you can get ahold of me within the hospital?â
âIf youâll be in isolation, I can forward a call to them, and they can let you know.â
âThat would be great. Thank you.â I smiled gratefully, handing back her clipboard.
Hoseok relayed his thanks, taking my hand to pull me along with him in the direction of the hospitalâs isolation ward. Though it was busy, the closer we got to where Yoongi was being kept, the more I noticed the number of people began to thin out. Not only that, but it was much quieter in this part of the building. At least, it would have been, had the shouting at the end of the hall not been happening. Hoseok dropped my arm, breaking into a run when recognizing Jinâs voice trying to be heard over the loud bangs. I picked up my pace after him, swearing under my breath. So much for being here when he woke up, I groaned internally. I was seconds away from rounding the doorway into the room, my momentum halted when my body slammed into Hoseokâs who was backpedaling his way out. The impact nearly knocked the breath out of me, my body stumbling back before Hoseok caught me with an arm around my waist, slinging the two of us away from the doorway right as a stool came flying through it.
âYoongi calm down before youâre sedated again!â Jin snapped.
Cautiously, Hoseok and I peeked around the frame. Two security guards stood with their backs to us, palms out as they approached the wild-eyed leopard who tore at the multitude of cords and tubes attached to him. Jinâs ears flattened, worried gaze flicking between the guards and Yoongi, trying his best to verbally calm the agitated cat while gesturing to the two men to back off. One glance at the situation was all Hoseok needed before throwing himself into the mix. He rounded the guards, moving to block their approach towards Yoongi.
âHeâs not a threat!â
Yoongiâs head whipped up at the sound of Hoseokâs voice, his fight with the medical equipment temporarily forgotten.
âNot a threat? Heâs throwing furniture around and is clearly hostile.â One of them scoffed.
âOnly because heâs not sure where heâs at or whatâs going on.â Jin explained, inching closer to Yoongi now that Hoseok was warding off the two men. âYou have to understand that these are extenuating circumstances. Our pack is spl-â
âAnd you have to understand that in his current state, heâs a liability to himself and others. We canât have him threatening the safety of other patients, he has to be restrained.â
They made to move forward, Hoseokâs concern revealing itself in the way his tail wrapped around his own leg at Yoongiâs snarl upon noticing the men coming at him. Quickly, I rushed into the packed room, intercepting the surprised guards.
âWait! We can calm him down, please, just give us a few minutes.â
âLady-â
âPlease. Five minutes. Thatâs all Iâm askin-â My words ended on a soft oomph~ with the sudden smothering I found myself in.
Yoongiâs body collided with mine, pulling me further from the perceived threat. His bristling tail curled around my thigh and tense arms wrapping themselves around my shoulders. I threw a hand up to let the guards know I was fine as they tried to lunge at the two of us. Jin moving to Hoseokâs side to act as a physical barrier between us and them.
âHeâs mated to her. She can calm him down.â
Security froze at that statement, looking to one another nervously. Though I wasnât well-versed in hybrid regulations and behaviors, I did know from my time as a PI over the years that separating mated hybrids was a big no-no. Although, that was standard procedure for hybrid-hybrid mates, I was hoping the same applied to human-hybrid couples as well. The longer the two strangers lingered, however, the more I could sense how on-edge it was making Yoongi.
âGive us a moment, please.â I begged, inputting as much emphasis as I could in my voice.
The last thing I wanted was for them to have just been given their freedom, only to be locked up somewhere else, or strapped to a bed. Neither option sounded like it would end well. An exasperated sigh was my answer, one of the guards dropping his shoulders before nodding reluctantly.
âFine. Five minutes. If heâs still feral, heâll be restrained.â
I winced at the term âferalâ. None of the seven Iâd met could even be considered close to feral hybrids, but I supposed now wasnât the term to argue technicalities when he was giving us the space we asked for. Yoongi watched their retreat, the tension not leaving him until they were out of sight and the door was shut behind them. Even then, his hold on me was unrelenting as he turned his attention to Jin and Hoseok.
âWhere is everyone else?â
âJungkook, Jimin, and Namjoon are with Tae.â Hoseok answered since Jin probably didnât know either. âHeâs in surgery right now.â
âWhat?â Jin blurted, whirling on Hoseok with worried eyes. âWhat do you mean heâs in surgery?â
âHe was shot while we were trying to escape.â
All three pairs of eyes turned to me, Jinâs face going pale at the news, his Adamâs apple bobbing as he swallowed.
âIs he- How bad is it?â
âThey said he was stable before they took him in, but I donât know the extent of the damage.â
While the othersâ hybrid features gave away their feelings openly, Jin didnât need them. He was an open book. The concern and sadness written across his face made it impossible for anyone to mistake how he took the news of his packmateâs injury. Gingerly, I reached for him, taking his hand to deliver a gentle squeeze of reassurance.
âI asked them to let us know when he was out. As soon as he is, we can go check on him.â
I wasnât naĂŻve enough to believe that my words dissolved his worry, but I did hope it brought him at least a sliver of comfort. I turned my attention to the leopard pressed to my back, glad to see that he was relatively unharmed.
âAre you okay?â
Slowly, he shifted his gaze to me, hiding the same worry Jin openly displayed behind the mask I had come to know was typical for him.
âWhat happened?â
âThey knocked you out and tried to take Y/N. Luckily, we were able to convince them to let Jimin go with her.â Jinâs brow furrowed as he relayed what he remembered happening. âNext thing I knew, Jimin had come back to get us out.â
âYeah, we managed to get away from the guards. I had them follow me so Jimin could get a signal up top. Namjoon, Hoseok, and Taehyung found me-â
âBeing nearly strangled to death by one of Jongsuâs men.â Hoseok spat, tail bristling.
Yoongi stiffened behind me, slender fingers cupping my chin to tilt my head up. He inspected the column of my neck, a low growl reverberating from him, through me at the sight in question where I had no doubt the redness was beginning to darken into bruises. And not the kind Yoongi liked to leave. I flinched against the soft touch on my cheek, having forgotten about the nasty blow I received to the face in favor of my sore shoulder and aching abdomen. Now that I was no longer fighting for my life, my injuries were starting to catch up to me. For Yoongiâs sake, I put up a fake smile, taking his hand so he would quit prodding at me.
âIâm fine, but thatâs when Taehyung was shot by Jongsu. Jimin and I hid in one of the corridors until I found Min to help us out of there.â
âWhoâs Min?â Jin and Yoongi asked simultaneously.
While Jinâs tone could have been interpreted as curiosity, Yoongiâs was flat out hostile. I looked over my shoulder at him, taken aback.
âAh, heâs Y/Nâs friend. A cop.â Hoseok chirped, oblivious.
Yoongiâs blank gaze never left Hoseok while he spoke, one fluffy ear flicking repeatedly. I watched it, the rounded appendage disturbing the surrounding black strands of his hair with every twitch. My limited experience with hybrids made me less than knowledgeable when it came to any of their habits, but I like to think Iâd spent enough time with Yoongi and his pack to have a general understanding of what their body language expressed. Especially their ears. Those appeared to have a mind of their own, even when the body attached to them said otherwise. Making a mental note of the action, I tuned back into the conversation, keeping my mouth shut concerning the new bit of information Iâd discovered.
âHe seems nice. I donât think Y/N would be friends with him if he wasnât a good guy.â
My brows furrowed picking up the leg of conversation I hadnât been paying attention to. Hoseok shrugged his shoulders, looking to Yoongi as if he expected the leopard to agree with him.
âYou planning on inviting him into the pack too?â Yoongi scowled.
Hoseokâs tail dropped and his ears ducked at Yoongiâs anger, his lips forming a soft pout.
âNo.â
âTone it down.â Jin scolded the cat, glaring at him. âRight now, our priority is Taehyung. We donât need your jealousy and temper tantrums.â
âIâm not jealous.â Yoongi defended himself, rounding his ire on a new target. âWeâve spent God knows how long locked in a fucking basement and the first thing weâre gonna do when we get out is look to trusting fucking humans? The species responsible for putting us down there in the first place?â
âYoongi, theyâre not all bad. One of them helped us escape.â Jin sighed.
âOnly because she wanted out too.â Yoongi huffed, dropping his hold on me and putting several feet of distance between us. âYou think if she had free reign to walk in and out of there she would have risked her own life to save ours?â
âExcuse you?â I whirled on him. âI realize that youâve been dealt some shitty hands, but you canât lump all humans in together. Thereâs people out there who genuinely care about whatâs happening to you all, Min and I included.â
âDonât lie to us sweetheart. We all know the real reason you put yourself in that situation was to bring down Jongsu for the pretty medal of honor it would probably bring you. If it just so hadnât happened to be our pack you were thrown in with, you wouldnât have given a shit about us.â
âEven if you werenât, I would have made sure everyone had gotten out. Donât think that just because we slept together, it makes you special.â
âOkay!â Jin intervened, moving in between Yoongi and I when the leopard took a menacing step forward. âItâs not the time or place for this. Yoongi, get back in bed until the doctor comes back and releases you. Hoseok, you stay with him. Iâll take Y/N with me to find the others.â
I glowered at the infuriating hybrid behind Jin even as the bear took my arm to gently lead me back towards the door. Yoongi hardly took his eyes off me even as I was pushed out the door, his narrowed stare expressing his distaste for me while the rounded appendage on his head started flicking again. Right before Jin nudged me out of the room, Yoongi averted his gaze, snarling softly before beginning to pace, the tip of his tail twitching. Hoseok was quick to try and console him, urging him back towards his bed despite the catâs obvious disinterest. I huffed a frustrated breath as the door closed behind Jin.
He bowed politely to the two security guards still stationed outside, letting them know that Yoongi was more or less calmer than he was before, but asked that they refrain from just barging in unannounced. Â I swiftly made my way down the hall Hoseok and I had come from only minutes ago, needing to put some space between me and that room. It wasnât normal for people to get under my skin so easily, but Yoongi seemed to have a knack for it. I took a deep breath, trying to reign my emotions in as Jin caught up to me, his hand reaching out for my shoulder only to think better of it at the last second and let it drop.
âAre you alright?â
âI think Iâd have better luck talking to a brick wall.â
âHe can be⌠difficult sometimes. He means well, heâs just crap at expressing himself.â
âI know Jin. I donât hold his words against him.â
He paused before leaving the isolation ward, his white ears swiveling to pick up the sounds outside the doors that my own, human ears, were too weak to hear yet.
âI donât want you to think we arenât grateful for your help. Without you, weâd still be stuck there, so thank you.â
His gratitude melted the last of the bitterness I had. My lips curling into a smile without much effort as I looked up at him.
âYou donât have to thank me, but I appreciate it, nonetheless. Youâre sweet Jin.â
His cheeks matched the shade of his hair, his hand came up to rub the back of his neck as he averted his eyes. His mouth opened like he wanted to say something, but the words never came, his lack of ability to articulate himself leaving him more flustered until I took pity on the poor man and saved him the trouble.
âLetâs go find the others and see if we can find out any more information about Taehyungâs condition.â
âYoongiâŚâ Hoseok sighed softly as soon as Jin and Y/N were out of sight.
âDonât start with me.â I growled, glaring at him.
His dark ears flattened and I felt bad for a second before Y/Nâs words echoed through my head again.
âŚDonât think that just because we slept together, it makes you special.
I snarled, making Hoseok jump. Behind me, my tail flicked in anger, my frustration with her angering me even more when I couldnât even refute her accusation. I was the one who told her neither of us would catch feelings. So why the fuck was I pissed that she stated what happened between us was nothing more than just sex. Because it was. We agreed that thatâs all it would be. I huffed with how confused I was. It wasnât like me to be so upset over something someone said. Especially from someone who wasnât even part of my pack.
âI know youâre upset, but you shouldnât take it out on her.â
I glanced at Hoseok, taking in the irritated flitting of his right ear and the limp tail behind him. He had turned to face me, his arms crossed, and eyes trained on me with a glint Iâd only ever seen him give the younger three when they were being scolded. I grumbled at the sight of it directed at me.
âWhatâs wrong? Itâs not like you to be so openly hostile towards people who havenât done anything to warrant it.â
âWhatâs wrong?â I spat, grinding my teeth. âTake a look around you Hoseok. Weâre in a human hospital and one of our packmates is in surgery right now. Forgive me if Iâm not in the mood to trust anyone at the moment.â
âIâm not talking about just anyone.â He snapped back. âIâm talking about Y/N. Sheâs done nothing except help us and check up on us since we got here, and you have the nerve to accuse her of only operating in her best interests?â
âYou mean to tell me you donât believe the reason she tried to so hard was because she wanted out too? Or rather, she wanted to bring down Jongsu. Thatâs the whole damn reason she wound up with us in the first place.â
âAnd Iâm not denying that, but that doesnât mean she doesnât care about us or what happens to any of the other trafficked hybrids. Whether you want to admit it or not, Y/Nâs not the type of person youâre trying to paint her as. If it was just a job to her, she wouldnât have made sure Jimin got away or risked her own life to find Tae help.â
He stepped forward, placing a hand on my shoulder.
âAnd whether you want to admit it or not, sheâs found herself a place within the pack. Thereâs no guarantee sheâll want to stay with us, but regardless, she has a place here. Namjoonâs accepted her and you know Jin is courting her even if he denies it. Jimin too. And I want her here too.â
I refused to look away from where I was burning a hole in the hospital bed with a glare. Even as Hoseok squeezed my shoulder and sighed softly. There was a time when Iâd be willing to do anything to secure the happiness of my pack. After weâd been caught and trafficked, that goal changed to making sure they were safe. Now that we were out of there and the threat that had been hanging over our heads for years had more or less vanished into thin air, I didnât know what to do anymore. I knew Hoseok was right. My packmates had attached themselves to Y/N far too quickly in the time weâd known her. Hell, I had let her presence get the better part of me as well.
But was I willing to let her in enough to welcome her when she wasnât even a hybrid? Humans formed bonds and relationships, yes, but not to the degree hybrids did. She would most likely form stronger attachments to one, maybe two, packmates and the rest would be left vying for attention she either didnât want to give or couldnât. That would create a rift in our dynamic and I didnât want anyone to feel as if they werenât good enough for her. Yeah, my packâs happiness meant a lot to me, but if I had to inflict some heartache now for the long-term, Iâd be the bad guy so no one else had to be.
âNo.â My words came out harsh, making Hoseok flinch. âYouâre all only infatuated with her because sheâs the first female youâd been in close confinement with in a long while. This idealistic reality youâre living in where you think sheâd be happy to join us, is a lie. Sheâs a human, Hoseok. Before us, sheâs never even associated with hybrids except in passing. What makes you think sheâd be willing to upend her life for you, or me?â
âWhat makes you think she wouldnât?â He retaliated, letting go of me.
It wasnât often that Hoseok got pissed off. There were very few things I could think of off the top of my head that would get him that way. And, apparently, I could add a certain human to that list. I narrowed my eyes at him. He was usually the member that took my side when it came to decisions that involved the pack.
âDonât be an idiot Hobi. Thereâs seven of us. Two of which who have openly expressed their attraction towards her, probably more who havenât. You think sheâd be okay with that?â
âI think you shouldnât be making calls for her. Let her decide what she would and wouldnât be willing to do.â
âAnd risk you all having your hearts broken when it doesnât play out how you want?â
Hoseok winced, looking away for a second before meeting my eyes again.
âItâs not your job to protect us from everything, hyung. Sometimes we have to figure things out on our own.â
I shook my head, brows knitting together in frustration. I turned towards the bed, gripping the footboard tight enough my knuckles turned white. I thought about my packmates. The way Jin practically hung all over her any chance he got. And how Namjoon lit up any time she came to him when we were planning our escape. And JiminâŚ
Fuck. Jimin. I ran a hand over my face, exasperated. Heâs never shown interest in anyone outside of our pack before. Let alone a female. What happened between the three of us should have been my first sign that shit would go sideways. He was too invested when it came to her. Foxes mated for life. If I let him go that far, there would be no going back for him. Y/N would be it and if she refused himâŚ
âI canât.â I whispered, my expression twisting to one of distress. âI canât take that chance.â
Hoseokâs anger bled out of him. His shoulders dropped, ears flattening in sadness as he realized my animosity no longer rose out of fury, but despair.
âYou might not get a choice.â He murmured hauntingly.
Y/N POV
Taehyungâs surgery was a success. They kept him in the ICU for observation and, unfortunately, was only allowed one visitor at a time. Unanimously, Namjoon was chosen to stay with him while the hospital staff graciously allowed the rest of us to hole up in a nearby family room. I stayed with them, partially because I had told Min I wouldnât leave until he got here, but mostly because I wanted to be here when Taehyung woke up. I stood outside of the room, keeping my voice quiet while I spoke to Minhyuk over the phone.
âHow is he?â
âOkay. The doctor said his surgery went well. Namjoon is with him right now.â
âAnd you? Did you get checked out?â
I huffed into the receiver letting a small smile slip through.
âYes. Everything checked out.â
âGood.â He didnât have to say anything for me to understand the relief in his voice. âThatâs the last time we send you on any dangerous undercover missions. You got lucky this time Y/N.â
âI know.â I sighed, leaning against the wall. âWhat about Jongsu, any luck finding him?â
âNo. I donât know how he managed to slip away, but we searched the place top to bottom. Heâs gone.â
Great.
I rubbed my eyes tiredly. Jongsu on the run was the last thing any of us needed.
âIâll be at the hospital in 15 minutes. Iâm briefing Captain on everything and then Iâll head your way.â
âAlright. Tell Hyunwoo I said hi. Oh, I also ordered a few pizzas from that shop near the station. Would you mind picking them up and bringing them with you?â
Min huffed a laugh through the phone.
âYeah. Iâll pick it up. See you soon.â
âBye.â
I ended the call, dropping my head back on the wall behind me. The dull throb of my neck protested the stretch, but the pain meds at least made it bearable while I searched the ceiling above me for some kind of answer about what to do now. With Jongsu in hiding, there was no guarantee that he wouldnât just pop up somewhere else and start over again. Trafficking hybrids and human women. That meant it was back to the drawing board for Min and his team. Which also meant that I would have to figure something out for myself.
Working undercover again on this case was a no-go. Every person involved with Jongsu knew my face. As stupid as he was, Jongsu wouldnât fall for the same trick twice. Heâd be more careful now that his operation had been infiltrated once. Damn. It was hard enough getting into that compound the first time around. Jongsu was careful about who he snatched off the streets. Women and hybrids alike. He was successful because he was so damn careful. I spent nine months undercover before Iâd been able to convince him I was the worthless street rat he believed me to be.
Nine grueling months down the drain.
Heâd be pissed that someone managed to pull a fast one on him. Min was right to assume he wouldnât just let that go. Not to mention the number of hybrids heâd lost because of it. Ugh, this situation was a mess now. I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath to center myself. As much of a mess I found myself in, I could only focus on one thing at a time and right now, that focus was Taehyung and the rest of his packmates. They were still in danger. Jin and Yoongi in particular. Polar bears and snow leopards were two of the handful of species most sought after. Jongsu might consider them well worth the risk in order to have them back. And since those two never left the company of their pack, that just upped the desirability. Not only would he secure those two, but the other five would also prove profitable.
I need to make sure Min had somewhere they could go. Somewhere safe and preferably far away from here.
âEverything okay?â
My eyes shot open at the hesitant voice. I lifted my head and turned it to see Jimin leaning out of the room just enough to watch me curiously. One white ear visible and pointed in my direction. I pushed myself off the wall, giving him a reassuring smile.
âYeah, everythingâs okay for now. Howâs Jin and Jungkook?â
He stepped out, giving a quick glance over his shoulder before quietly closing the door behind him.
âTheyâre sleeping.â
I nodded. âYou should probably get some sleep too.â
âIâm not tired.â
His reply was curt, eyes darting to the side as a nurse emerged from a room across the hall. She gave the two of us a polite smile before wandering down the corridor to the nearest nursesâ station. Jimin watched her go, ears alert on his head and tail stiff. Though I wasnât well-versed in hybrids, I had enough sense to recognize when animals were uncomfortable or anxious in their surroundings. Jiminâs fox genes dominated his behavior in much the same manner. I hadnât realized previously how on edge they were, but it made sense. They were in a new environment and split up. If I were him, I wouldnât be interested in sleeping either.
âAlright.â I said on an exhale. âI ordered us dinner. My friend said he would bring it to us, but I was going to take a trip down to the cafeteria to grab some plates and drinks. Want to come with?â
Jiminâs attention shot back to me. Big white ears swiveling to face me while his tail began a lazy swish.
âYeah.â He agreed hurriedly, happy to be given something to do.
It wasn't supposed to happen this way. A quick in and out. Infiltrate and bring down a hybrid trafficking ring. Saving lives while we're at it. But things hardly ever go to plan. And being locked in with seven hybrids that meant more to me than victims forced into a life they didn't deserve was definitely not according to the plan.

âYoongi?â I could hear the inflection of fear in my voice while I shook him, trying not to drop him.
He didnât answer and didnât move, leaving me to ease him onto the ground as carefully as I could without neither of us falling. I couldnât see shit without any light on this side of the room, my hands roaming Yoongiâs unconscious form blindly trying to figure out what the hell happened.
âYoongi.â I called him again, louder this time, no longer concerned with whether I woke the others or not.
The others. The thought of them came crashing back. Help, I needed help. I let Yoongi go, planning on making a dash for the bedroom door on this side of the room for more light as my panic took hold.
âNamj-â
My call was smothered mid-name, the hand clamping over my mouth tightly with the arm it attached to dragging me towards their body. I yelled into the hand, struggling against whoever held me uselessly, but it wasnât a total loss. The noise was enough to rouse the pile of hybrids. The darkness didnât help me distinguish them; I could only hear the panicked scrambling seconds before a silhouetted figure stepped in front of me.
âNobody moves, or youâll be next to be tranqed.â
My eyes flicked to where I thought I had left Yoongi, a small bit of relief knowing he was sedated rather than hurt breaking through my panic. All at once, the overhead lights blinked to life, blinding in their intense fluorescence. I blinked, willing them to adjust quickly as Namjoon stepped forward.
âTranquilizing any of us was unnecessary.â He leveled a glare among the small group of armed men.
âBullshit. Your damn cat is as good as feral after watching him attack one of my boys unprovoked. Iâm not stupid enough to try snatching his mate without a bit of precaution.â
âSeparating them will only make it worse. When he wakes up-â
âHeâll never see her again and we wonât have to worry about it.â
Namjoonâs mouth snapped shut, his jaw clenching in anger. Beside him, Jiminâs eyes went wide, ears ducking low and flattening against his head as he looked worriedly between me and his packmate lying on the floor, unconscious. My mind was racing, trying to come up with some alternative as our plan A was beginning to backfire right in front of me. My voice came out muffled under the hand covering it, I pulled at the wrist, my struggling catching the attention of the man before me. He motioned for my captor to release his grip, my voice coming out before I even took a breath.
âJimin.â I blurted on an exhale, my eyes finding the man in question. âLet Jimin come with me.â
Jiminâs ears perked up at the sound of his name before quickly dropping once more, expression turning to one of confusion and fear as he surveyed the people around him. Namjoon fixed me with a blank expression, dark eyes searching mine for an explanation that I was unable to give without blowing my plan. Finally, with a barely perceptible nod, he relented.
âHeâll go.â
Jiminâs surprise, whirled on Namjoon next. In a bid to provide him some comfort, he laid a hand on Jiminâs shoulder.
âOne of us needs to and if you wonât take Yoongi, then take someone in his place.â
âWeâre only taking the girl. End of story.â
With a sharp jerk of his chin, the man holding me began moving towards the door. At our retreat, Jin moved forward quickly, holding his hands in front of him when the guards turned their weapons toward him.
âListen. If one of us doesnât go to confirm that she and the baby are okay, you really will have a feral cat on your hands. He becomes unmanageable and your jobs get harder. Is that what you want?â
Everyone paused, the man in front seeming to weigh his options. He cast a look over Jimin. Out of all of them, he looked the least threatening, ears low, tail tucked, it should have been an obvious choice if he were looking for whichever packmate would be the least amount of trouble.
âYou, on him.â He ordered one of the others, before turning to Jimin. âLetâs go.â
Once given the okay, Jimin covered the ground between us in seconds. I was released, allowing Jiminâs arms to come around me instead. I felt him swallow hard, grip tight even as we were shoved in the direction of the door. Over his shoulder, I met Namjoonâs eyes. Though Iâm sure it wasnât easy to watch one of his pack members walk out alone, he hid it well. Silently, I tried to relay my promise of taking care of him, hoping he understood before sliding my eyes down to the floor where Jungkook kneeled beside Yoongi. My heart squeezed painfully seeing him lying there. My eyes never left his prone form until Jimin and I were urged through the doorway into the vestibule, cutting all of them off from view.
In a gesture of reassurance, for him or me, I didnât know, I took Jiminâs hand. It was the first time in days, possibly even weeks, I had been outside of that room. My memory of everything on the outside fuzzy, but I made sure to map our steps away from it. I counted every hallway and turn under my breath, eyes scanning every inch for landmarks I could orient myself with later. Somewhere in this god forsaken place was Jongsu. He was my first priority. Finding him and making sure he was caught was the only way to be certain this trafficking ring was brought down. It was the first step to making sure Yoongi and the others were safe and granted the freedom they deserved. Along with whoever else they had enslaved down here.
Our surroundings became slightly more familiar. They walked us past the infirmary-like room they had placed me in when I first arrived, hardly sparing it a glance as we continued down the hall. My hopes that we would be led upstairs were soon dashed however, as the man in the lead wrenched open a heavy metal door, revealing a stairwell going up and down. Jimin and I were pushed towards the set of stairs leading further down. I froze in my tracks, refusing to take the steps. Jimin stopped with me, alert gaze glued to me as I tried to quickly foster a new plan. Fuck, I hated when things didnât play out how theyâre meant to.
âY/N?â Jimin whispered.
âWhat the fuck are you waiting for? Get a move on.â
Making a decision, I slipped my hand inside the collar of my shirt, finding the tracker I had tucked into my bra. Obscuring it the best I could, I grabbed Jiminâs hand again, transferring it to him and praying none of the men noticed.
âFind a signal. Take the stairs, as far up as you can go.â I could barely hear my own voice, but I knew Jiminâs hearing was much better than my own.
âDidnât you-â
Not giving anyone a chance to figure out what was happening, I let go of Jimin and flung every ounce of my weight into the man behind us as he approached. The force cut him off and threw him off balance causing his body to fall into the other man behind him. The two hit the floor hard, both thankfully landing outside the doorway enough for me to slam it shut after them. I whirled around, meeting eyes with the last guard as he raised his tranquilizer gun towards me. Before he could pull the trigger, Jimin slammed into his side, the dart gun going off at the same time I ducked, and the manâs foot caught the edge of the stairs. He stumbled, reaching out for the railing and missing, the sound of his large form rolling down the steps echoing within the silent stairwell.
I didnât bother hanging around. If we were going to have a chance in hell, we needed to go. Now.
âUp the stairs!â
Jimin was a lot more agile than me. His lean form sprinting up the stairs two, sometimes three, at a time with me on his heels. I counted the seconds, waiting for the other two guards to come after us, or for the one Jimin had pushed down the stairs to recoup, my heart pounding harder when I heard the first shout of alarm. Together we had only cleared two floors, and I unfortunately didnât know how many more there were to go. I stopped at the next landing, breath coming out in harsh pants as my mind reeled trying to think of what next. Jimin paused, halfway up the next set of stairs before realizing I was no longer with him.
âY/N, come on!â
I shook my head, chest heaving as I glanced at the door beside me. If Jimin was going to reach the top, I had to make sure he had the least amount of heat on his back as possible. He could climb the stairs faster than I could and outrun whoever he came across, but I had to buy him some time. I turned back to him, eyeing the tracker still in his hand.
âKeep going.â
âWhat?â
âDonât stop until you find a signal.â I told him hurriedly, hearing the yells coming closer up the stairs.
I backed towards the door leading God knows where, grasping the handle and thanking my lucky stars when it turned. Unlocked. I looked to Jimin over my shoulder.
âFind a signal and hide long enough for help to arrive. Go.â
I could tell he wanted to argue, but the voices were getting louder, coupling with the pounding of feet over the concrete steps we had just cleared. Jimin hesitated only a second longer, firm resolve coming over his features before he continued his sprint up the stairs, not sparing another look behind him. He was out of sight within seconds, footsteps no longer audible as I opened the metal door the rest of the way to peer outside. The hall was much like the one we were led through, soft yellow, fluorescent lighting above stretching the length of both ends of it, providing enough light to show it was deserted. Internally, I found myself hoping the layout was similar as I turned back around the face the stairwell. My hand gripped the door handle hard, knuckles turning white while I took the chance to attempt to catch my breath. My heart beat against my ribs like a sledgehammer, almost keeping time with the footsteps that couldnât be more than one flight below me at this point.
I watched the corner closely, ready for any hint of a person to round it.
And begged to anyone listening for this plan to work.
I stood outside of their makeshift pallet, watching amusedly as Taehyung and Jungkook wrestled their way into the mass of blankets to beat the other to the fluffiest corner. Hoseok rolled his eyes, plucking a single blanket off the pile as everyone let the two get settled. The same blanket of his he had let me use before. Jungkook and Taehyung stilled, the two deciding that sharing the little corner was better than neither of them having it as they tucked into one another, although I was pretty certain Jungkook took up more of the space than Taehyung. Jin was the next person to jump on claiming a spot for himself, slowly I lifted my gaze to Namjoon who shrugged.
âThe middle is usually the spot to be, but I imagine everyone is trying to be considerate since youâre here.â
âOh.â My eyes drifted back to Jin who tried his best to situate his area. âYou guys donât have to accommodate me; I can squeeze in wherever.â
Yoongi grunted beside me, also watching the polar bear fluff up a few of the pillows and blankets before nodding in satisfaction. His pink hair brushed over his forehead with the action, huge smile directed my way as he motioned me in.
âMe?â I asked surprised, figuring he was putting so much effort into it for himself.
âOf course. You can sleep here. Yoongi there, and if you donât mind, me here?â He phrased it as a question, pointing at the empty spot that bordered the other side of the space he had made for me.
Yoongi on one side and Jin on the other. Namjoon smiled softly, trying to hide it by pretending to scratch his cheek, Jimin nearly visibly deflated, a pillow of his own within his grasp that he was planning to set up after Jin most likely. Yoongi didnât so much as make a noise, but he did watch Jin closely, feline-like gaze assessing the bear and then the spot he made. Hoseok chirped, hand coming down on Yoongiâs shoulder.
âHow sweet! Letâs not let his hard work go to waste then.â
Jin looked a little unsure, but the way his rounded ears shot up when I took my first step forward was cute.
âI donât mind.â I reassured him, returning the smile he had given me earlier.
For good measure, I took hold of Yoongiâs hand, leading him in with me. I took care to not mess anything up. Honestly, I was still incredibly out of my element when it came to them. If they were regular people, I wouldnât have been so cautious, but hybrids, especially ones who seemed to take such care of their personal space, better safe than sorry. I was still a bit in disbelief that they had invited me into their makeshift bed in the first place. While Namjoon assured me it was fine, and I had to take his word for it, I hoped my presence wasnât awkward for the others. If it were possible, Yoongi looked even more out of place. His ears were down, small frown tugging at the edges of his lips, the tip of his tail brushing over my calf as he wrapped it around his own while we made ourselves comfortable in the center of the pallet.
âYou okay?â
His eyes flicked to me, one nod serving as my answer.
âYoongiâs usually not in the middle, he prefers the edge.â Jimin provided seeing as Yoongi wouldnât.
âWe can moveâŚâ
The suggestion had Jin pouting now, and I realized that I hated making any of them sad. My brain struggling to come up with a better compromise when Yoongi huffed.
âItâs fine, just lay down.â
The words had barely left him before he flopped down, leaving enough of a gap between himself and Jin for me to fit. Jimin quickly snatched the spot on Yoongiâs free side, the large cat seeming a bit more relaxed as soon as he did, finding Jiminâs hair to ruffle it. I wedged my way between the two, Jin shifting to make the close proximity more comfortable. Hoseok and Namjoon waited until we were pretty much settled to find their own spots. Namjoon taking an open space near the two youngest while Hoseok opted for the other side of Jin. He sank into the pile, flipping his blanket up and over his head and that was the last I saw of him. Jin rolled towards me, his shoulder obscuring my vision of the amorphous lump behind him.
Yoongiâs arms wound around me, tucking me into his front, nose burying into my hair. He let out a few soft purrs before going quiet again. Jin fussed a bit more, wrenching a blanket away from Taehyung who complained in low grumbles.
âHush, you have plenty over there.â Jin scolded him.
Taehyung didnât utter another sound, his black curls the only part of him I could see as he nuzzled himself closer to Jungkook. True to his considerate nature, Jin had only taken the blanket to cover me with it, leaving himself with barely a corner of it.
âYou should have most of it.â I whispered, pushing it towards him. âYouâre bigger than me.â
âItâs fine. I can hop in with Hobi if I need to.â
I wondered about that. I couldnât see him, but I figured Hoseok was well on his way to sleep at this point. Yoongiâs rhythmic puffs of air across my neck told me he was out too, or very nearly there. I peered up at Jin, waiting until he settled himself back into his little space before lifting the edge of my blanket in invitation.
âWe could share?â
He looked surprised I had offered but didnât neglect the suggestion. In the next second, he slid under the blanket, his chest pressed to mine, and I realized I sorely underestimated how close we would be to one another sharing like this. I couldnât keep the flush of color off my cheeks as he scoot closer, making sure I was still covered. He was⌠large. Much bigger than I had thought.
âGood?â He rumbled softly, his breath ghosting over my forehead.
I nodded, lifting my face to his and paused. The end of his nose kissed mine, body enveloping me beneath him, and I briefly thought of just how small I appeared to him. While I never really thought of myself that way, I certainly felt petite under Jin. As if on cue, the overhead lights shut off, plunging the room into total darkness minus the soft glow underneath the first bedroom door where the bathroom light shone through. That was apparently the only room that the curfew lights didnât affect. The first time I noticed they shut off, I found it a bit unsettling, but I had to admit that having the hybrids with me eased my nerves significantly. Not only at night, but at any given time. The constant reminder they provided that I wasnât alone along with their reassurances and attempts at keeping me comfortable were duly noted. When I was first brought here, finding out I was going to be tossed into a room with seven of them, a part of me panicked not knowing how I would have to defend myself against seven predators if it came to it.
In retrospect, I got lucky with them. At least, to me it seemed that way. The least I could do in return was help them get the hell out of here. The blanket around me stirred, from the general direction, I had a pretty good idea it belonged to Jin, only further confirmed as his palm cupped the back of my head, guiding me into the junction between his shoulder and neck. The intimacy of it took me aback a bit, but I didnât fight it, letting myself sink into his embrace.
âGet some sleep.â He yawned, his fingers sifting their way through my hair to massage my scalp.
If I could have melted into the touch, I would have. Probably would have even started purring if I had any hybrid in me. The motion was incredibly soothing and relaxing, and I imagined it was probably why they enjoyed head pets as much as they did. I hummed in reply, too blissed out to actually answer him.
I wasnât sure what woke me. Through a heavy-lidded gaze, I could tell it was still sometime in the night as the lights were still off. The bedroom door was open allowing a bit more of the bathroom light to spill into the main room, but barely. Jin was sound asleep, his hand still in my hair and I wondered how long it had been since we had gone to bed to be in the same position. Yoongiâs arm was no longer around my waist, instead, I could feel the press of someoneâs cheek against my back. I extricated myself from Jin enough to look, surprised to find Jimin there rather than Yoongi. Wondering if maybe he had moved from the middle pallet to the edge sometime, I lifted my head, only to pause seeing someone pacing back and forth across the room.
My heart pounded harder for a moment, the panic I had begun to feel surge forth, retreating as I noticed the thick tail trailing behind the figure. He would pace, then stop to listen, before resuming once more. Unsure whether this was common occurrence for him, or something I should be concerned about, I carefully pulled myself out of the mass of limbs. At the loss of my body heat, Jimin was quick to seek out the nearest source, curling into Jin who welcomed him even in sleep. I waited with bated breath for both of their breathing to even out again before standing and navigating my way over the rest of them. If Yoongi noticed I had woken up, he didnât show it, his tail flicking agitatedly as he paused again, one ear rounding towards the vestibule he stood in front of.
âYoongi?â I barely whispered, worried my voice would wake everyone else if I were too loud. âWhatâs going on?â
âSomethingâs wrong.â
Anxiety came knocking on my door again full force, my eyes trying to search his for answers despite how dark it was.
âWhat is it?â
He shook his head, ears straining in the direction of the door. âI donât know.â
âWhat do you hear?â
âNothing.â He murmured, listening again before turning back to me. âThatâs the problem. I canât hear anything.â
He rubbed one of his ears as if the problem laid with them rather than the lack of noise itself. In the dark, I cast a worried look over to where the others slept, or, at least in the direction I thought they were. I might as well have been blind with how little light we had creeping in from the bedroom.
âDo you have your tracker?â
I was surprised he was bringing it up, but nodded, nonetheless.
âYeah, Iâve been keeping it on me per Namjoonâs suggestion.â I replied. âWhy?â
âBecause I think youâll be needing it sooner rather than later.â
My throat ran dry, and though I knew it was bound to happen, I couldnât say I wasnât a little bit terrified. I looked up at him, hoping I looked braver than I felt.
âShould we wake the others?â
âNo. I donât have anything other than a weird feeling right now. You should go back to the den though; Iâd feel better knowing youâre with them.â
I wanted to argue so he would know I didnât feel right going back to bed while he stayed up pacing by himself, but Iâd gotten to know Yoongi well enough over the last few days to know how to choose my battles with him, and this was not one I would come out of victorious.
âOkay,â I sighed. âBut can we open the door a bit more? Iâd feel better if there was more light com- oof!â
I barely caught Yoongi as he stumbled into me. My arms coming around his upper body while he swayed unsteadily before slumping into my hold completely. His dead weight was heavier than I expected it to be, his limp form nearly slipping out of my grasp.
I have no clue what Tumblr's issue is, but it would not let me upload this chapter on the desktop đ, so if it looks weird, I'm sorry. I had to do it from my phone.
When this entire "mate" thing was explained to me, someone neglected to mention just how primal their base instincts became. Normal, mundane things were an awful lot harder to accomplish with a needy cat that insisted on draping himself over you any chance he could. Or one that was on the verge of snapping someone's head off just by attempting conversation with me.
"There's an exam room upstairs. I think we were all brought to it when we initially came." Namjoon nodded after hearing my explanation of what I remembered when I was brought in. "It's mostly empty though. I'm not sure they'll bring you to the same one for a physical."
The others were sat around the table. In much the same order we had been this morning at breakfast. The only exception being Jimin having moved a little closer towards Yoongi and I much to my grumpy mateâs ever-increasing displeasure. I tried my best to ignore Yoongi's behavior, but I couldn't help the pause in conversation any time a low growl came from him. He kept a watchful eye on Jimin and the other on me.
"You're probably right. Which means we're going to have to make a mental note of any possible exits when we're being escorted."
"Just you, most likely."
I raised an eyebrow at Namjoon, picking up on the way his gaze slid to Yoongi.
"I don't know how much help he'll be in this state."
I sighed softly, turning my head to Yoongi. With my attention now on him, he chuffed loudly. Ears flicking excitedly as he leaned in, nose immediately finding that junction between my neck and shoulder.
"Are you sure it'll be in his best interest to attempt an escape with the way he is right now?" I had to ask.
Taehyung mumbled around a mouthful of food, nodding vigorously.
"Absolutely. The human part of him that formulates logical reasoning may not be fully intact, but his baser instincts will kick in to protect you should you run into any trouble. A mated male would never let his female or his cubs come to harm."
The validation from one of his packmates seemed to please Yoongi. One arm wrapped around my hip, tugging me closer to him while the other settled over my abdomen. Yoongi rumbled appreciatively, pressing onto my stomach gently. I didn't know if any of the others could see what he was doing, but I couldn't fight the blush spreading through my cheeks as I smacked his hand away. Too late I realized that was a violation of one of his rules, the growl only served to solidify that lapse in judgment.
"Y/N." Yoongi warned.
Around the table, everyone sat a little straighter. Reacting to Yoongi's tone immediately. Jimin's ears flattened against his head, eyes quickly looking away from the two of us. Pretending as if I didn't break Yoongi's number one rule, I tried to start-up the conversation between Namjoon and I once more.
I hardly even got a sound out before Yoongi's fingers gripped my face. His fingertips dug into my cheeks firmly, pushing my lips out into a pout.
"Yoongi." I tried to sound menacing, but it was kind of hard with my mouth puckered like a fish.
"Apologize."
"For what?" I grumbled in disbelief.
"For your actions and for breaking one of my rules."
I glared at him, that part of me refusing to bow to anyone surfacing its ugly head. That stubbornness that served to get me in as much trouble as it had made me good at my job. Yoongi returned my glare, his tail brushing my calf as it flicked back and forth. Namjoon cleared his throat, glancing at me before pointedly looking at Yoongi.
"You can either apologize, like you mean it, or I can fold you over my knee right here. Your choice."
My eyes widened. "You would spank me?"
"I would do much more than that kitten."
I held his stare for a moment longer. The worst part is that I knew he'd make good on his threat. The word left my lips tasting bitter, but I apologized, nonetheless. Yoongi grinned triumphantly; a smile that made me want to wipe it off his face as he squeezed my cheeks a little more.
"Good girl. Now give me a kiss."
I made to protest, my eyes moving from person to person around the table, but Yoongi tilted his head to block my vision. Sighing defeatedly, I nodded. The sooner I complied, the quicker this would be over, and I could salvage what's left of my pride in front of the others. I leaned into him, Yoongi's ears perking up as I came closer.
For as much of a hard ass he always was, his ears were the one part of him that deceived him. They were dead giveaways to how he really felt. The only other exception being sex, I suppose. He's awfully in tune with himself and his emotions in the bedroom. Yoongi's eyes flicked behind me, only lingering briefly before urging me on. The action was odd, but before I could turn to see, he stopped me.
"Don't turn." He ordered, tone harsher than even when I had first met him.
Clearly, whatever he saw bothered him. His ears pinned back, a low growl rumbling from his chest, eyes trained across the room in an icy glare. I couldn't look behind me with Yoongi's grip on my cheeks, but I could at least see Jungkook and Hoseok out of the corner of my eye. The two of them stood abruptly, Jungkook moving out of sight while Hoseok paused at the end of the table we sat at. Jimin also moved, abandoning his seat behind Yoongi in favor of standing directly behind me.
The tension rolling off all of them set me on edge. My eyes found Jin's across the table, his mouth moving although no sound came with it.
Jongsu.
I quickly looked back at Yoongi. He tore his gaze away long enough to meet mine, his face eerily void of emotion, but I knew that was more for show on behalf of Jongsu rather than me.
"He's here to verify?" I whispered.
"I'm sure someone told him there's a possibility you and Yoongi mated. They'd been looking for the two of you the last few days they've dropped off meals." Namjoon answered.
Namjoon's voice fell an octave deeper, addressing Yoongi even as he gave a hard stare of his own towards the vestibule.
"Sell it."
I had about half a second to prepare before I found myself in Yoongi's lap and his lips on mine. While I hated putting on a show for a man like Jongsu, I knew that's what he was there for, and it was our only ticket at escaping if he fell for it. I threw my inhibitions away, surrendering to Yoongi, playing my role of submissive mate like Jongsu had hoped I would. I'm glad my back was to him, it made it easier to ignore that smug satisfaction I was almost sure covered his features, and as much as I wanted to hit Yoongi for it on occasion, it was nothing compared to what I wanted to do to that sleazeball.
Yoongi released my cheeks, his hand burying into my hair next. He tugged on it, pulling my head back for access to my neck. I barely managed to stop the moan as his mouth latched onto the skin there. It was sensitive, part of it still covered in the love bites he happily peppered me with over the last few days. I bit my lip hard, trying to remind myself of the situation we were in and not how well Yoongi knew my body despite the short amount of time we've known each other.
I didn't know if it was a hybrid thing to be so in tune with their partners, but it wasn't hard for me to admit that out of all my lovers, Yoongi was the only one who played me better than I could even probably do myself. With Yoongi at my throat, I wasn't left with much room to move. Above me, Jimin took a step closer, brown eyes darkening with that same haze he had that morning watching Yoongi and me. One tall, white ear flicking in interest between me and his packmate. Slowly, he reached towards me, his fingers cupping my chin as he dragged his thumb across my bottom lip, pulling it from between my teeth.
"Yoongi." He murmured quietly, a low whine following it.
The sound didn't only catch Yoongi's attention, but everyone elseâs in the room as well. I was reminded again of the room full of people. Though I knew they'd heard much worse, it was different having them witness it. And they were certainly witnessing. In my peripheral, Taehyung leaned a little bit closer. Namjoon no longer watched the small window across the room, his own attention riveted to the three of us. The hand in my hair loosened, Yoongi's chuckle sending a pleasant shiver down my spine.
"You're so selfish sometimes Minie. I let you watch one time, and you want more." He tsked.
Jimin let out a quiet huff, one that didn't go unnoticed by Yoongi who looked more than amused at his younger packmate. I cleared my throat, turning my attention to Namjoon.
"Jongsu?"
"Gone." He grunted, shifting in his seat. "He left shortly after Yoongi pulled you into his lap."
"Good." I nodded, trying my best to ignore the two men at my front and back. "How long do you think it'll be before he's back?"
Yoongi was clearly having fun teasing Jimin. The cat continuing to smother me in his affection, showing off just about every mark he could.
"Not long, hopefully. If he's as desperate for a new batch of exotics as I believe him to be, he'll want to confirm sooner rather than later."
The sudden growl from Jimin caught everyone off guard. I whipped my head around to look at him at the same time Yoongi's arm around my waist tucked me closer into his body. His ears went back, answering Jimin's growl with one of his own. Before things could really escalate, Hoseok clapped a hand on Jimin's shoulder, pulling him away.
"Come on Min. Yoongi may tolerate you the most, but he'll only allow you so many chances pining after his mate like that."
"At least wait until his mating fever wears off." Jungkook mumbled.
"Good news is that he didn't bite his head off right away." Jin smiled at me reassuringly.
Namjoon nodded. "Which is why I think we should all go back to sleeping in the nest."
Yoongi frowned, while the others had expressions mixing between surprise and hesitancy.
"With Y/N?" Hoseok asked nervously.
I couldn't blame him. Even I was confused and nervous with the suggestion. Yoongi shook his head.
"Absolutely not."
"Yoongi, you know as well as I do that it would be better for the eight of us to stay together like we had been before Y/N came."
"She's my mate Namjoon. And you want her in a den with six other unmated males."
"Better safe than sorry. We can each watch over each other again. It's protection for us and for her. No one is going to risk pursuing her in the middle of your mating fever."
"He's right Yoongi." Jin said softly. "Safety in numbers. It's the only reason the seven of us have been able to stay together this far."
I looked at Yoongi. His lips were set in a hard line, and I could tell he wasn't happy with the idea. I wondered if there was some sort of backstory there. A reason the seven of them chose to make themselves a pallet in the main room rather than use the provided beds and bedrooms. I made a mental note to ask about it sometime.
"Only for a short time." Namjoon promised. "With some luck, we'll be out of here before too much longer."
The reminder of our ultimate goal seemed to win him over. Yoongi's shoulders slumped and his tail thunked against the floor heavily. With a subtle nod, he relented.
