*In this stage, the player starts out standing in a wide, barren and empty battlefield that looks like a desert, with weapons of dead soldiers strewn about but no one in sight. As you proceed through the field, a huge number of soldiers from the Tokugawa army will show up and attack you.

Masamune: (in a cool manner) If you don’t fight like you’re going to die otherwise, it’ll be over in no time.

Tokugawa soldier: The preparations are ready! Let us go and form our alliance with Dokuganryu.

Ieyasu: That’s our purpose for coming this far. …Dokuganryu is a man we can depend on. To win against Mitsunari, this alliance would be necessary. Everyone, I’m counting on you!

Tokugawa soldier: Yes sir! Ieyasu: Tadakatsu, let’s protect everyone with your strength. Tadakatsu: ………!

<<Date Masamune’s Stage>>

[Stage start] Ieyasu: (boldly) Dokuganryu! I, Tokugawa Ieyasu, had come to hear what you have to say! Masamune: You finally came, didn’t you? You’ve kept me waiting for too long.

[Middle of the stage] Ieyasu: (happily) I never even thought that you were going to just accept the alliance. Masamune: (coolly) Well, hold up. I also have my own conditions. If you won’t accept them, then I’ll crush you.

[Masamune Boss Battle] Ieyasu: Let’s hear it, Dokuganryu! What are your conditions? Masamune: I don’t have any intention of following anyone. My condition’s that we’re both equals!

Masamune: The proof that we’re both equals… I’ll show it to you in this one battle!

Ieyasu: Why did you ally with me? Masamune: (frankly) Needless to say, to defeat Ishida.

Masamune: (frankly) The events of that day… I’ll never forget them. I can’t hope for the future if I don’t get past this.

Masamune: (frankly) I’m not doing this for anyone. I’ll defeat Ishida for myself!

[After you’ve defeated Masamune, Stage Clear Cutscene]

[Masamune battling against Ieyasu. As Masamune closed in for an attack, Ieyasu managed to knock Masamune’s three swords out of his hand, ending the battle.]

Ieyasu: (cold sweat) Phew, that was close…

[Looking at Ieyasu’s calm expression, Masamune twirled the remaining swords in his hand and sheathed them.]

Masamune: (in a cool manner while grumbling) Well, this is it… Ieyasu: (taking a step forward, speaking seriously) Dokuganryu, there’s nothing more reassuring for me than you joining as an ally. Masamune: Enough of that, now. It’s your victory. I’ll be counting on you, then.

[Masamune raised his hand and began walking away. Ieyasu, casually looking at his back while thinking of Mitsunari, called out to him and stopped him.]

Ieyasu: (suddenly) …Dokuganryu. Masamune: (turning to look at Ieyasu without being defensive) Hm? Ieyasu: (in a casual chat-like manner) Do you… have any intention of forgiving Mitsunari?

[The question being too sudden, Masamune was at a loss for words for a moment, but then questioned back.]

Masamune: (a little surprised by the suddenness) Forgive, you say? Ieyasu: (nodding with a serious expression) Yes… I feel that you right now would be able to do that. Masamune: (thinking a little after he heard that) Hmm… I wonder. To forgive or not to forgive, let me think about it after we survive this war.

[Masamune collected his three swords from the ground and sheathed them, leaving the place. Ieyasu watched him leave, murmuring with a determined look.]

Ieyasu: (very determined) Yes… One of us will lose, and then die. I definitely cannot allow myself to lose… Definitely…!

[He clenched his fist tightly.]

[Wanting to take revenge on Mitsunari for defeating him at Odawara, Masamune decided to form an alliance with the Tokugawa army.]

<<Forming an alliance with the Tokugawa>>

Masamune: (calmly) Kojuro, I have something to tell you. Kojuro: Yes… What would it be?

Masamune: (calmly) We’re forming an alliance with Tokugawa Ieyasu... It would be a united front. Kojuro: The confrontation with Ishida right before us, forcefully breaking through the Tokugawa would be reckless… So rather than that, as both of us are against Ishida, you had decided to form an alliance instead…

Masamune: (calmly) Ieyasu had also been asking for an alliance for some time. So there’s no way he would refuse this. Kojuro: (happily) …Masamune-sama. Masamune: What is it? Kojuro: (happily) I, Kojuro, also approves of that as the most composed method. Masamune: (laughing bitterly a little) Ha, that’s not like you at all.*

*Referring to how Kojuro usually never agrees with him because he’s always too reckless.

<<Off to meet Tokugawa Ieyasu>>

Masamune: (lightly and without being too eager, as if he’s just off to take a walk) Well… Shall we go and meet Ieyasu, then? Kojuro: Masamune-sama… I, Kojuro, shall protect your back no matter what. Masamune: Yes, it’s something that only you can do.

<<Tokugawa Ieyasu’s Stage>>

[Stage start] Ieyasu: (with caution) You came here… Which means… Had you finally decided on an alliance? Masamune: You can say so… But on one condition.

[Middle of the stage 1] Ieyasu: (with caution) Dokuganryu, what are your conditions? Masamune: (in a cool manner) It’s simple… You and me, neither of us is above nor below the other.

[Scenario writer’s notes: Masamune knows that Ieyasu is stronger than him. But this condition is a matter of pride.]

[Middle of the stage 2] Ieyasu: (sincerely) We’re going to end up fighting Mitsunari later… I’m glad that you had made your decision before that.

[Middle of the stage 3] Masamune: (talking to himself) The person whom Ishida is after. Ieyasu… It’s you.

[Ieyasu Boss Battle] Masamune: (with energy) I’ll fight with everything I’ve got, Ieyasu! I’ll bring you down and proof that we’re equals!

Ieyasu: (cautiously) Dokuganryu, what had made you so determined? Masamune: (calmly) If I must say it… It’s a lost battle. Masamune: (calmly) Then… The existence of my rival, and my right eye. Ieyasu: That would be Sanada and… Katakura-dono, isn’t it? Ieyasu: Dokuganryu, those are bonds. I can see the bonds that connect you to those around you.

[After you’ve defeated Ieyasu, Stage Clear Cutscene]

[Masamune and Ieyasu battling against each other. Cross counter. They stop their attacks, Ieyasu’s fist in front of Masamune’s face and Masamune’s sword at Ieyasu’s throat.]

Masamune: (grinning) Hmph… Ieyasu: (cold sweat [‘That was close~’]) Phew…

[Ieyasu lowers his fist and Masamune lowers his sword.]

Ieyasu: (with admiration) Just as expected… No one rivals you in terms of technique. Masamune: (calmly) It’s an honor to accept that praise… I’d have liked to say that, but this world is a big place.

[Hearing that, Ieyasu looked at Masamune as if he was studying him.]

Ieyasu: (observing, with quite some interest) Dokuganryu… What actually happened? We’ve exchanged all sorts of conversations until now, but… I feel as though this is the first time I’ve heard your true feelings. Masamune: (coolly) It’s nothing like that.

[Masamune shrugged, returning to his normal cool self.]

Ieyasu: Then, about the condition…

[Ieyasu trailed off, patting dust off his clothes. Masamune became a little nervous.]

Ieyasu: (as if he was questioning Masamune about saying something so obvious) You and I are equals. I had intended it to be like that from the start.

[Ieyasu peered at Masamune a little, as if he was going to ask something.]

Ieyasu: Did you intend for it to be something else?

[Masamune was taken aback by Ieyasu, who said it so absentmindedly. He clicked his tongue to hide his surprise from him.]

Masamune: (murmuring, couldn’t find himself to hate Ieyasu) Tch… Looks like the thing that grew up isn’t just your height. Ieyasu: (grinning) Hm? What, what? Did you say something?

[Ieyasu was about to move closer to Masamune, but the latter turned and glared sharply at him, pointing his sword at his throat again.]

Masamune: (in a low voice) I won’t say it twice, so listen carefully. Ieyasu… One day I will catch up to you and surpass you.

[Nonchalantly suppressing his grin, Ieyasu laughed out loud quite daringly.]

Ieyasu: (suppressing, fearlessly) I understand your disposition very well.

[Both glaring at each other. Masamune soon lowers his sword.]

<<Right before Sekigahara, talking to Ieyasu>>

Ieyasu: (cautiously) Dokuganryu… You have your own goals and I have mine. But I think that’s alright. Masamune: If it’s not like that, there’d be trouble, won’t there? If our goals are the same… One day I’ll end up having to fight you. Ieyasu: (laughing bitterly) Heh… You’re right.

Ieyasu: (quietly) Dokuganryu, I’m counting on you… Come back alive. Masamune: (in a low voice) Ha…Don’t say something so obvious.

[Masamune dies.] Ieyasu: (trembling) Wait, Dokuganryu… WAIT--!

Ieyasu: To aim for the head once there’s an opening… That much dangerousness probably fits you.

<<Boss Battle, Masamune (player) vs. Ieyasu>>

Masamune: (fearlessly) There’s no one who looks like they would poison you*… Is there, Ieyasu…?

[*Definitely a reference to actual history. Mune-chan and I found some accounts that are probably what this line is talking about:

1) The popular story’s that after he became the shogun, Ieyasu died of food poisoning (although research and facts say that this is highly unlikely, and he had most likely died from a disease).

2) One account about Masamune said that he once brought food for Hidetada (Ieyasu’s son and heir, Ieyasu had passed away by this time), but one of Hidetada’s vassals suspected that Masamune had poisoned the food. Masamune’s angry reply was that he would never even think of poisoning people. If he wanted to take them down, he’d do it on the battlefield, given his pride as a warrior. And even then, that would have been 10 years ago, when Ieyasu was still alive (after the war ended and everything had settled down, trying to beat people now is pointless).

^These two. Unfortunately, we couldn’t settle on which one it’s actually referring to. (2) sounded very likely, but since it was interaction with Hidetada instead of Ieyasu, we couldn’t be 100% sure. +++ Ieyasu’s Blue Route, Masamune’s Stage +++

[Alternate storyline. After defeating Mitsunari (first battle), Ieyasu allied and traveled with Motochika in order to unite the country and bring peace to the land. After defeating Shimazu, their journey brought them to battle Masamune, who had unified the North.]

Motochika: (seriously) Look, Ieyasu, once you’ve defeated the old wedge (= Shimazu), the one commanding the north is… Ieyasu: (surprised) Dokuganryu! The age of the youths had finally arrived, hasn’t it? Tadakatsu: ………!!

<<Battle with Dokuganryu!>>

[Entering the stage] Ieyasu: (boldly) Time for battle, Dokuganryu! Let’s decide this age’s ruler!

[Stage start] Masamune: (widening his eyes) My, my… I see we have two strange people (= Ieyasu & Motochika) passing through. Kojuro: They’re indeed a ragtag team… But they look like they can pack a punch.

[Middle of the stage (1)] Motochika: Haha! Isn’t this fun, Ieyasu?! Ieyasu: I haven’t had such an exciting battle in a long time either!

[Middle of the stage (2)] Masamune: (enjoying himself) Nice, nice, this is the splendor of life! Doesn’t it make you want to seize victory with everything you’ve got? Kojuro: (enjoying himself) I also feel the same.

[Masamune Boss Battle] Ieyasu: Come, Motochika, follow me! Motochika: (jokingly) Hey hey, aren’t you supposed to say, “Walk beside me”?

Masamune: (grinning) Even so, only the vigorous guys get to remain, huh? Motochika: That’s inevitable! Vigor is indispensable when it comes to new things!

Masamune: (enjoying himself) This is an important last battle! Ieyasu: Then let’s continue it, as long as we’re still alive!

[Alternate storyline. After defeating Mitsunari (first battle), Masamune continued on his quest to unite the land. The process of doing so had eventually brought him to face Ieyasu.]

Masamune: This is an exchange between the two people who aim to be the conqueror. There’s no need to hold back, give it all you’ve got! Ieyasu: Just as usual, Dokuganryu. It’s really like you.

Ieyasu: Although from my side, I’d like to ally with you and move forward together. Masamune: I won’t work under anyone… You know that, don’t you?

Masamune: Ieyasu, what would you always hold on to no matter what you do? Ieyasu: (smiling) Quite a lot that I can’t possibly answer all of it. I had just gained another one recently.

[Stage start] Masamune: Ieyasu, isn’t it…? It’s interesting. The moment I see you, two men’s faces surface in my head.

[Scenario writer’s notes: He’s referring to Shingen and Yukimura.]

[Entering the stage] Ieyasu: Exchanging fists, fists and words, I had made sure of it with my own fists… Dokuganryu, you’re a man worthy of being a conqueror, without a doubt. Masamune: (fearlessly) Is that so…? In that case, you don’t have any complaints about me ruling the land, do you, Ieyasu?

[Stage start] Ieyasu: (sincerely) I’m here to meet the Chief of Oushuu, who had a preference to showy things. I can’t possibly give him a proper reception without organizing at least this many men to come with me. Masamune: (with a calm anger) Ha! What a courteous reception, Ieyasu! …Although it’s a little not enough to satisfy me.

[Entering the stage] Ieyasu: (intending to come there as a part of the Eastern Army to provide backup for Masamune) Sorry to keep you waiting, Dokuganryu, leave the backup to me. Masamune: (ready to devour everything) Backup…? What kind of misunderstanding had you stumbled into? Only one person can walk out of this victorious by defeating everyone else, and that includes you!
