Just a post introducing the two(three?) main protagonists of The Sanctuary, Duncan Gagliardi/Heartless Duncan and Nancy Gagliardi!
(CW: mentions of death)
He/him, 16 as of 1954, deceased
Duncan was a sweet boy with a semi-complicated reputation in the small town of Murlayfield. On one hand, his friendly demeanor, intelligence, athletic abilities, and willingness to help people in need made him pretty popular among his peers. On the other, some thought of him as an "odd duck" with mannerisms that they saw as "flamboyant", "too affectionate/feminine", or "weird".
Duncan never outwardly showed if he minded, though internally he was quite self-conscious about how people perceived him and always tried to keep up appearances. He was also a bit cocky when it came to his own safety and always assumed he'd be fine, no matter the situation.
Duncan died on October 16th, 1954. He disappeared while walking home from a school dance and was found two days later, his body hidden in a pile of logs on the banks of the Greenbrier River. Nobody knows what happened to him He then disappeared again (much to his family's distress) on the day of his funeral. His case quickly went cold, and his story has since become the stuff of legends.
She/her, 15 as of 1967, alive
Nancy is a practical, logical girl who is very skeptical of the supernatural. She prides herself on being too clever to fall for "silly ghost stories" and "old wives tales", though she tries not to let it make her sour or seem arrogant. Most of her peers see her as a stick in the mud anyway, and she only has two real friends in town: the Vernon sisters. She feels more comfortable with them than with anyone else outside of her family/close family friends. She shows her caring, creative side much more freely around them.
She gets good grades and stays on good terms with most of her teachers, who consider her a "model student". She's easily curious and fascinated by science (especially geology, where she gets her love for interesting rocks). In contrast, She tends to be suspicious and closed-minded about the supernatural. Nancy's staunch disbelief in such things is partially due to the legends about her older brother's death. While she never really knew Duncan (he died when she was 2), she still sees the stories about him being a vengeful spirit out in the forest as incredibly disrespectful and downright meanspirited. She refuses to believe anything like that could possibly be true.
...
That is until she encounters something she can't logically explain. Something that looks eerily similar to accounts of the monstrous "Heartless Duncan".
He/him, appears 16 as of 1967, Living Legend
Speaking of Heartless Duncan, he's a bit strange, too. He's the physical manifestation of an urban legend who has suddenly gained consciousness and the memories of Duncan Gagliardi... aside from his death. He wanders around in the woods for a while after awakening, groggy and unsure of what's going on, until he trips down a steep ledge, breaks his leg, and is saved by a creature called Not-A-Deer (Nod, for short). He's taken to Sanctuary Facility Alpha, a hospital/research center for paranormal entities.
He has no idea that he's supposed to be dead until he's told he has no pulse and that the current year is 1967. After a brief existential crisis (the first of many), he decides that he wants to figure out who killed him and bring his killer to justice, hoping that maybe that'll save his soul or revive his pulse or something. He has no idea what he's doing, but he's trying.
And that's the Gagliardi siblings! I'm planning on posting more about them and other characters later, sooooo yea :)
