GOLDEN NUGGETS, Dug From Austin Pavements by Statesman Reporters.

Extra policemen have been put on duty to fill the places of several regulars who are down with the dengue.

Owing to the continued sickness of the rector, the Rev. T.B. Lee, there will be no services at St. David’s church tomorrow.

Tom Allen Discharged.

Yesterday Attorney Wheeles appeared before Justice Purnell in the interest of Tom Allen (colored) who is charged with being connected with the Ramey atrocities perpetrated at Mr. V.O. Weed’s house some time ago.

Justice Purnell was of opinion that the evidence was not sufficient to warrant the detention of the prisoner further, therefore he discharged him.

It will be remembered that on the night the crime was committed footprints were discovered in the yard of Mr. Weed. Sergeant Chenneville, in company with other officers, brought dogs to the spot, and put them on the scent of the line of footprints. The dogs caught up the scent, and after pursuing them for some distance, treed Tom Allen in Evan’s stable. Allen was brought out of the stable and his feet were measured with the footprints in the sand. There was an exact fit. Allen was then arrested and locked up in jail where he has been up to yesterday.

The physician who made an examination of the body of Mary Ramey stated positively that she had been outraged. To satisfy the law and himself Dr. Burt repaired to the jail sixteen hours after the murder was committed, and made a thorough examination of Allen. That examination convinced Dr. Burt beyond a shadow of a doubt, so he states, that if Mary Ramey had been outraged Tom Allen was not the guilty party.

This was about all the evidence in the case.

Must Show Cause.

Attorney Joe H. Stewart has sued out a writ of habeas corpus before Judge Walker in the interest of Cato Marshall, who, it is reported, knows something about the Ramey murder. The petition says that Marshall is illegally held, without order from any court, or warrant of arrest, therefore Marshal Lee is ordered to bring the prisoner before Judge Walker this morning and there so cause to the court why the said Cato Marshall is restrained of his liberty.

The old roller coaster is being torn down.

No developments in the Ramey murder case yet.

The street gang will probably be kept busy today repairing bridges.

The first house built in Austin was a double log building where the First National bank now stands.

The city was visited by a heavy rain yesterday afternoon and night. For a while it seemed as if the floodgates were open, and the rain descended in torrents and flooded the city.

And the Officers Still Pursue Him.

Austin is a town of rumors. Rumors are on every street corner. The newspapers reporters almost walk their legs off some days hot after rumor.

But aside from this. The city has been full of rumors for several days past relative to the Ramey murderer. At one time Mr. Rumor had assassins captured and in durance vile. At another time a “little white boy” knew something and would tell if half of the reward was given him. These rumors were immediately after the horrible occurrence recorded in these pages. Of late Mr. Rumor has come to the front in the shape of a first class detective from New Orleans. The public caught on to this rumor and seemed to rest easy in the thought that now Mr. Detective is here the fox will be run into his lair and captured. If there is a detective in the field the Statesman doesn’t know it, nor, we think, anyone outside the city officials, and of course they are mum.

There is this much about it, however: There are brave men at work endeavoring to ferret out the perpetrator. Parties have been spotted and are watched by these men, and some day Austin will be turned topsy turvey over the receipt of the that at last the assassin is in durance vile.

At present there are three men in confinement suspected of knowing something connected with this bloody business, and there are others who will be arrested as soon as sufficient evidence is accumulated against them.
