Please tell me I’m not the only one who sees this
StillOkay, hear me out: I am both a Marvel nerd and a theatre kid. I’m certain that I am not the only one who can make that claim, so I submit this to you, my peers, for your review:
If Wanda Maximoff were a musical, she would be Alice by Heart.
I mean Wandavision and ABH have almost the SAME plot!!
Wanda Maximoff creates a false reality, based on the various sitcoms that comforted her in her childhood, in order to cope with the death of Vision and keep him with her.
Alice Spencer essentially also builds a false reality (but in that weird musical metaphorical way) based on Alice in Wonderland, which comforted her in her childhood, in order to cope with the impending death (via tuberculosis) of her best friend/the man she is in love with, Alfred.
And both the show and the musical have powerful motifs about grief and how to deal with it.
And, if you know the musical, here are some parallels to consider:
Still
- This song doesn’t correspond to an exact scene, but it’s essentially how Wanda wants to keep Vision there with her, so she creates this sitcom world where everything is perfect for them to have this picturesque life.
“Still / Can’t stories go as stories will? / Here, here they do / each afternoon / stays rosy late / just me and you / our golden room / let the mad queen wait.”
Sick to Death of Alice-ness
- This song also doesn’t really correspond to a particular show scene but the concept of Wanda doing all of this because of her grief? I don’t know how to explain this but the lines:
[March Hare/Alfred] You oughta be ashamed!
[Alice] It’s all about your pain!
[March Hare/Alfred] Sorry, but whose pain?
[Alice] You’ll leave me all the same!
- like,,, how Wanda tries to explain away her actions by saying that she’s making Westview better, but it’s really all about trying to soothe her own grief.
Some Things Fall Away
- This song is pretty much a general commentary on loss and grief, sung by the Cheshire puss. But tell me some of these lines don’t remind you of Wanda???
“The heavens are forever / We only stay a night / we fill our rooms with children / and then put out the light / and though there is no reason / some things fall away”
- hello??? we fill our rooms with children?? and then put out the light??? You can’t tell me that doesn’t correspond to Wanda’s creation of her children? aNd tHEn thE sCenE wHeRe shE saYs gOodbYe tO tHeM aNd tUrNs oFf tHe LiGhT????
“And though there is no reason / no one comes to stay”
- Literally Wanda loses everyone who is important to her. Her parents. Her brother. Her love. Her children. poor baby
Do You Think We Think You’re Alice?
- corresponds to the scene where the people of Westview essentially challenge Wanda about how they all have lives that she’s taken over and prevented them from living.
“Do you think we think you’re Alice? / You’re the one and only Alice? / And we’re nothing when you’re not here? / Only something once you’ve got here?”
I could keep going but I think you get the point. Anyway, if you love Wandavision / Musicals / Alice in Wonderland, you would love Alice by Heart. I am absolutely distraught because the bootleg I had got taken down from YouTube, but that’s a story for another time.
