TRIP’S BEEN AWAKE FOR ABOUT 10 minutes now, though he’s made no effort to move in all that time. the reason ? his arm is stuck, trapped beneath marty’s side as they face him, eyes still closed. he could easily pull his arm free, but that would risk waking them, and there’s something about the gentle rise and fall of their breaths that makes him not want to do that——not yet anyway. for now he just wants to hold tight to the moment. relish in it. let his mind wander and question when he’d last woke up feeling this warm and comfortable and safe. there’s a dull pounding in his head, and his feet hurt — leftovers from the party the night before — but he doesn’t mind. not now. not with their legs tangled together under the covers, a perfect snapshot of their childhood.
but they’re not children anymore, are they ? time marches ever forward, as tragic as that is ; their innocent sleepovers can’t last well into noontime like they used to. eventually they’ll have to get up, confront their blistering, young adult hangovers, and get to work. trip sighs. he’s always hated waking up before them ; it means he has to be the responsible one. before anything though, he takes a picture in his mind, allows himself to smile openly at the way the sun lights the blonde rivers in marty’s hair like honey. then he brings an index finger to their cheek. ❝ hey, wakey wakey, ❞ he calls, gently poking.
