The Bible Project - Word Study: Martus - "Witness"
In the Bible, the word “witness” is used to describe both a person and an action—someone who sees something and then talks about what they’ve seen. Similar to today, this word is used in both legal settings and to describe an experience with God. But what’s most interesting about the word witness is how it illuminates the story of Scripture, especially the role of the people of God. In this video, we explore how this word contributes to the overarching story of the Bible.

Being a martus involves a further factor as well, namely mission. In secular matters the eye or ear witness may decline to testify. But he who has been touched by the Christ event cannot but be a witness of Christ (Acts 4, 20). He has felt the hand of the Lord Who says "I send you..." (Luke 10, 3). He who would withdraw from this mission loses his status as a martus. The light that is put under a bushel does not illuminate, but is itself extinguished after the oxygen has been consumed, by the nitrogen which remains — to use a metaphor from the world of physics.
