In: 'A Guide to the Dragon World' MudWing troops had roles each sib would be assigned to depending on what they were talented at, so I thought it'd be fun to figure out which roles Clay's biological sibs fell into. First things first lets get the obvious out of the way...
Bigwings: Reed and Clay. I don't think I need to explain these two given that this is plainly stated in canon. As a side note though I like to think that Crane acted as a second in command for Reed and her death, in addition to learning that Clay should have been their Bigwings, is what causes Reed's excessive self-doubt. In spite of his own uncertainty however the rest of Reed's troop seem to have unwavering confidence and loyalty for him so Reed's worries are all but confirmed to be in his own head. Interestingly both Clay and Reed don't seem to recognize how vital they are for holding their respective groups together and I think they'd both benefit from a nice long chat with each other.
Healer: Pheasant. In the prologue of 'The Dark Secret' Pheasant doesn't panic when the IceWings ambush them and Crane's death while tragic is something she had managed to successfully compartmentalize, unlike Marsh and Sora. Healers need to be cool under pressure to be able to quickly assess and deal with an injury without getting emotional over the fact that someone you care about is hurt and in Reed's troop Pheasant's the one that fits the bill. The MudWing Tribe needed every healer they could in the aftermath of the War of SandWing Succession which is why Pheasant couldn't join their siblings at Jade Mountain Academy. Splitting up a troop is usually a MudWing's last but Reed didn't want to squander the the rare opportunity Clay had given them to potentially elevate their station. So while the younger sibs went off to a school filled with royalty and advisors Reed stuck around to keep Pheasant company and potentially pick up some healing knowledge of his own.
Treasurer: Marsh. In the books Marsh is shown to be flighty and slightly prone to catastrophizing which is why I think Treasurer is the perfect role for him. Being the Treasurer of the group means that Marsh's in charge of managing all of their supplies and ensuring that for every disaster scenario his anxious mind can come up with his troop will have what they need to deal with it. Treasurers also require a decent memory along with the ability to track and calculate what a troop requires and should prioritize in attaining which made Marsh a good candidate for attending Jade Mountain Academy.
Gatherer: Sora and Crane. Sora is a quiet contemplative dragon so I imagine if she had the choice, spending some extra time in the wilderness without her bustling siblings would be a nice break. In addition, Sora was able to independently find and accurately identify wild dragon-flame cacti, a task that I imagine was relegated to the MudWing gatherers during the war. While I think Crane shouldered some of the responsibility in leading the troop I believe she also helped Sora forage for supplies when they were running especially low. These trips with just the two of them helped bring Sora out of her shell but also left her all the more devastated when Crane died.
Communicator: Umber! Saving the best for last. Umber is a sociable empathetic dragon and while he isn't unfalteringly confident he is willing to put himself out there in an attempt to make friends. Umber seems to have a good understanding of how other dragons tick, not to Qibli's extent of course, and within a day managed to befriend the majority of his winglet and even managed to minutely lower Carnelian's guard. These types of skills are vital for Communicators whose main purpose is to negotiate on their troop's behalf and mediate any conflict before they can escalate. I imagine most of Umber's talent lies in his emotional intelligence not his book smarts and the main reason he was sent to attend Jade Mountain was to prevent Marsh and Sora from isolating themselves in Reed's absence.
Hey Marsh, how you holding up man?
“I’m glad I’m clawmates with him!” -Marsh
Marsh, Agender!

Random WOF headcanons that don’t make sense to anyone other than me:
-Pheasant and Marsh are twins. Idk they just have twin energy to me
-Bouncing off that, Marsh is trans
-IceWings are the biggest dragon tribe. MudWings are dwarves compared to them
-IceWings also see having long, thick fur as a weakness (Winter is a floofy boi btw)
-Wasp and her family made up the BeetleWings so they could claim that they had Clearsight’s blood (therefore justifying keeping the book to themselves)
-The BeetleWing lie became so widespread that the LeafWings believed it (hence why Sequoia told them about the BeetleWings)
