mid-year book freakout ๐
tagged by @marsdetective :) thanks!
Number of books you've read so far: I have read 29! I usually read like three to four at once (an audio, a fiction, a nonfic before bed and a graphic novel) but then I get really into one of them and just focus on that while forgetting whats happening in everything else ๐
perhaps this is my sign to change my reading habits (which I probably won't do haha)
Best book you've read so far in 2025: I am going to chose one from each of the previously mentioned types:
Audio: The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World by Robin Wall Kimmerer - this is a book I truly think everyone should read. I love Robin Wall Kimmerer's writing and the way she looks at the world. She is an indigenous scientist and shares knowledge and wisdom from both worlds (and combines them into one) in a beautiful and inspiring way.
Fiction: Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli - this is a YA romance and I have read it before BUT! its the ten year anniversary of it and it means sooo much to me <3 It was one of the very first queer books I read and the first to really resonate with me so I just love it <333 Also I love to think of Simon and Blue in 2025 married and maybe even with kids ?? ahhh ;____;
Non-fic: Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green - this wasn't quite what I thought it was going to be (but not in a bad way!) while it is technically a history of the disease, there is a very strong emphasis on what needs to happen next for the world to be rid of TB (or for it to be treatable in every part of the world. Not just rich countries) which I enjoyed. John Green always writes with such compassion and I find his voice and the voices he uplifts to be very meaningful.
Graphic: A Song for You and I by K O'Neill - A ranger who loses their way and then finds it again with the help of a violin player. Very sweet and cozy :) K O'Neill does it again!
Best sequel you've read so far in 2025: Warriors Graphic Novel: The Prophecies Begin #2 by Erin Hunter and Sara Goetter, Natalie Riess. This is also the only sequel I have read this year. and holy moly I forgot how dark and violent warrior cats is!
New release you haven't read yet but want to: Brian Selznick's new book Run Away with Me that I have checked out from the library but just haven't gotten around to.
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year: hmmm ND Stevenson's new book and I am sure there are others but I cannot think of them right now haha.
Biggest surprise favorite new author (debut or new to you): Ooo Sacha Lamb. I read When the Angles Left the Old Country and it was soooo good. Also Martha Wells! I just finished the first murderbot diaries and I can't wait to listen to more!
Newest fictional crush: Truly I do not get fictional crushes!
Book that made you cry: Gosh I cry very often when reading so probably most books I've read this year? But I did cry multiple times while rereading The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt. Its a middle grade book that takes place during the Vietnam war and there are sooo many parts that kinda punch you in the gut??
Most beautiful book you've gotten so far this year: hmmmm maybe Are You Listening? by Tillie Walden? I could look at her art allll day :)
Book that made you happy: Moomins! by Tove Jansson and Lars Jansson. I have read a couple of the books and comic collections and they are very delightful and whimsy and very pointed and sometimes just very strange and I enjoy them so much!
What books do you need to read by the end of the year? I try not to pressure myself on what I need/should read. I have dyslexia so getting though books in general is a really big achievement (plus if I tell myself i need to read something by X date it will make me not want to look at the book ever again let alone read it!) My next read though is the sequel to The Wednesday Wars called Okay for Now which looks like its also gonna make me cry!
i shall tag @itwoodbeprefect and anyone else who wants to do it!
