eddie gets really sad on his mom's birthday.
he locks himself on his room and doesn't answer anyone's calls for a day or two. he just stays in bed sulking, only getting up to go to the bathroom and sometimes to drink water.
it's like this for 11 years until 87, when steve gets in his trailer with the key he gave to him, opens his bedroom door and gets in bed with him.
they lay together for a while, until eddie starts talking.
"she would have loved you, you know? she would've loved how happy you make me and how you take care of me. I hate that it won't happen. I hate that we're not getting ready for her birthday picnic right now. I remember that she loved doing those. we did it every year. even on rainy days, she would find a way to make it happen"
"that's really nice. I'm sure I would've loved her too. she seemed like a really fun person"
"she really was," he says and smiles for the first time today. "she was always coming up with some made-up story, and she loved dancing. I loved dancing with her, too. she always said I was the best dance partner she ever had."
he can feel tears running down his face. it's so nice to talk about her with someone else, someone who didn't get to know her the way he did. it's like he's keeping the memory of her alive with them.
he must be sobbing harder now because steve squeezes him more fiercely and makes him turn around to face him.
"come here, baby." he kisses the top of his head and runs his hands up and down on his back, "you can let it all out. I want to hear everything about her when you're ready, okay?"
eddie just nods, burying his head on steve's chest.
they stay like that until it starts raining and the sky darkens.
eddie tells steve everything he remembers of his mom, and when wayne gets home, he helps them find the old photo books.
steve says eddie looks just like his mom.
in the following years, eddie picks up a new tradition. every year, on his mother's birthday, he goes to her grave to give her new flowers and talk about everything and nothing, and then he goes home to steve and they make birthday pancakes, that she would've loved, and eddie retells all of his favorite stories. keeping her alive in his and steve's heart and, later, on their kid's too.
