Ā ABIGAIL HARRISON | ASTRONAUT
Abigail Harrison is a girl with a dream. She aspires to be an astronaut. But it doesnāt stop thereāshe dreams ofĀ becoming theĀ first astronaut to Mars. With dreams this big, it takes setting goals and working hard each day to make them a reality. In 2011, at the age of 13, Abby began to speak publicly about her dreams. Her work over the years as an international STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) and space ambassador has led to a following of over one million people on social media.

In 2015, at the age of 18 years old, Abby foundedĀ The Mars Generation, a 501c3 nonprofit with the support of an advisory board of astronauts, engineers, scientists and her hundreds of thousands of online supporters.
The nonprofit has reached over 25 million people in its first two years of operation with its work to educate and excite kids and adults about space exploration and STEM education.
So last week during one of my space camp missions, my EECOM (the one who deals with environment in the shuttle and anomalies) saw a error light show up on his screen and he starts shoutingĀ āHouston! Houston, we have a problem!ā and the kid next to him smacked him and saidĀ āWeāre Houston, stupid!ā and poor little guyās eyes got so big lolĀ
A girl at camp today said that she believed the robot apocalypse was coming soon, but with the advancements weāve made in technology and the state of human society, she feels safer with her life being dictated by a logical machine than whiny politicians.Ā

We had STEM Fest in my local city; I saw this as a nice opportunity to teach children about what being a Mars Generation means.
A lot of students immediately assumed that you have to have a very high IQ and strong engineering skills to be part of it and while it is true that,Ā it does help to have such background; it doesnāt mean they canāt be part of it ~ our dreams shouldnāt be crush from traditional paths or the way we are told to do it.
A couple of young girls told me thatĀ robotics, computers, space would are topics their brothers talk about and why was I ( a girl )Ā be in any way interested in it?
My first answer to come out was ā because its our history, itās there.ā I moved on with how robots carry out with humanity dreams and how AMEE won third place in the nation for NASAās mining competition.Ā I also mentioned that if I am going to call my self a Mars Generation person I should in any way contribute and whether or not our ideas are taken by NASA at least they can built on from those ideas. I had a very positive reaction made by all the girls š
On the other hand, I admired my teammateās way of talking to students and faculty; he is passionate about our project and he can clearly put them into words; he was able to capture anyoneās attention to AMEE and encourage students to consider joining any STEM related field.
To conclude with todayās post I thought that STEM fest was a great place to start reaching out to younger generations. At the end of the day we received invitations from faculty to visit themĀ and talk about AMEE and our 2018 mining project.

Ā Day 1: Best New Movie You Saw Last Year
Ā The Martian
Ā Thereās no debating this choice. Ā Science, Mars, potatoes, and Matt Damon.
Iām not going to delve too deeply into this movie, because Iāve talked about it a bit in previous blogs (here and here). Ā I am, however, going to highly recommend it, again.
And conclude with a shameless plug for The Mars Generation š.
Ā Whatās the best new movieā¦
