Since the inception of the National Commission for Women came into existence, according to NRI cells, 2018-19 witnessed a maximum number of cases and complaints against the absconding NRI husbands. In the past ten years, NRI cells received 4,274 complaints from all the Indian states, but the data of 2018-19 show maximum complaints from the Northern region. You can find the data below:

With the increasing complaints every year, the officials of NCW stated that more and more women are taking a step forward to report the cases. As per the evaluation of the complaints, NCW reported that they receive complaints from both women living in India and those residing in foreign lands. Major allegations by the women residing in India include domestic violence, desertion, and dowry harassment by in-laws and husband.

There are complaints where the in-laws or the husbands have forcefully taken away the passport of the women followed by issues where women didn’t know about the vulnerable situation of the husbands. One of the major challenges for women residing in abroad is to contest court cases related to divorce or child custody initiated by husbands due to lack of support. In some scenarios, husbands also file false cases against their wives.  

However, with the rising complaints against NRIs who abandoned their wives in abroad and increasing pressure on the Indian government by victims to amend the existing laws- India introduced “The registration of Marriage of Non-Resident Indian Bill,” 2019 in Rajya Sabha at the end of the budget session in February. The proposed bill gives power to passport authorities to seize the travel documents of NRIs who didn’t register their marriage within 30 days of getting married in India.
