When I watch the new episodes of Arrested Development involving Lindsay and Marky Bark's relationship/lifestyle, I get serious flashbacks to my ex and wonder if that's what my life would be like if I had actually kept dating him.
Lindsay Bluth's character development in S4 of AD is kind of fascinating.
In the earlier seasons, she wants others to see her as more than just a pretty face, and yet Lindsay, herself, seems to believe that she's nothing more than just a pretty face. Her whole sense of self-worth is dependent upon others (namely men) finding her beautiful and sexually attractive.
So then, in season four, she winds up with the face-blind Marky Bark, for whom physical attractiveness is basically entirely irrelevant.  And Lindsay really struggles with this, for Marky is unable to provide the affirmation of her beauty that she desperately needs. And, since Lindsay believes that her beauty is the only thing about her that's lovable, she is unable to recognize that Marky does love her and value her, regardless of how she looks.
That's why she jumps so easily into Herbert Love's arms. Herbert Love makes it very clear that he appreciates her sexual attractiveness, and this gives Lindsay the affirmation that she's been craving.
But then Lindsay discovers that her physical beauty is the only thing about her that Herbert Love values. Indeed, Love was under the impression that Lindsay was a prostitute. Â
And this becomes a turning point in Lindsay's life. Because, during her time with Marky, Lindsay was slowly learning that she truly is more than just a pretty face. Yes, she's beautiful, but there are other things besides her beauty that make her powerful and worthwhile. She realizes that she no longer needs to have men fawning over her in order to feel valued.
And thus, Lindsay finally has the confidence to take her place in the world and to actually do something with her life.
Headcanon: If Marky Bark and Ann ever met one another, Mark's inability to see faces and Ann's inability to be seen by anyone would miraculously cancel each other out.
Mark would be thrilled that he could see someone without having them identify themselves every time and Ann would be thrilled that someone actually notices her.
