The cast is amazing, I actually learned a lot about the Philippines, Imelda Marcos and Ninoy Aquino (I know it's fictional but it opens a discussion and as an European I knew few about the tangles with US). 🎵Also music+concept by legend David Byrne and music by Fatboy Slim? So good!🪩
Finally it's also an ode to the people and to resistance over dictatorship, we do need that (also the outcome is a bit depressing there).

A document held sacred by many in this country is at the center of Heidi Schreck’s illuminating play, What the Constitution Means to Me. Much like the document to which the title refers, this play will transcend time and always be an applicable text, commenting on this nation’s adoption and interpretation of the Constitution and its subsequent amendments. Led by a charismatic, grounded Maria Dizzia, this play will not necessarily change the way you already think about the law of the American land, but will certainly convict and entertain your views as ones which should always be challenged, justified, and up for discussion.

Ms. Dizzia’s command of the monologues, timing of the jokes, and comfort-ability in the pauses make her performance one that is purely outstanding. Her knack for never making the script sound like rehearsed words, but rather a re-telling and opinionated conversation that we, the audience, are invited to be part of, allows for Ms. Schreck’s script to receive this fully-realized dramatization with effective lines and affecting anecdotes. Ms. Schreck’s fluidity between playwrights’ form for the near-solo show gives Ms. Dizzia allowance to make the text her own, to bring personal light to what appears to be a very specific message from Ms. Schreck’s experiences.

In addition to Ms. Dizzia, Mike Iveson brings character and vulnerability to the Mark Taper Forum stage. Starting out as the moderator for the character of 15 year-old Heidi to impress with amendment and Constitutional knowledge, Mr. Iveson delivers a comically commanding power over the audience, not one of intimidation, but one of curious politeness. Then, Mr. Iveson reveals a more emotionally drawn performer who has a background which has shaped who he is today. His monologue about an encounter with a buff, bald man in a bar is a stirring talk about how one can accept the other whether they understand the person or not. The Saturday evening performance I attended brought Jocelyn Shek to the stage as the high school debate adversary opposite Ms. Dizzia. Ms. Shek’s composure, eloquence, and comic timing, shown in some academic jabs at Ms. Dizzia’s age and arguments, are well-received moments of precise performance.

Oliver Butler’s direction is seen in its simplicity and highlighting of key phrases, arguments, and anecdotes. His understanding of Ms. Schreck’s voice and how a show like this needs to flow is widely apparent in the staging. What the Constitution Means to Me is a question most probably haven’t valued as one they should answer. Perhaps in today’s political climate, it’s become a question we’ve been asking more often than before. Whether you’re a Constitution enthusiast, purist, or abolitionist, Ms. Schreck’s play is worth your time. Thought-provoking theatre doesn’t come along as often as it should, so this is one to surely take advantage of.

I’m gonna be honest: It was hard to focus on #Jitney tonight, but there’s behavior that can’t be controlled and behavior that can, and a little compassion never hurt anyone.
