SubCulture Take 5 / Mark McLean
One of the most dynamic and versatile studio and touring drummers in the jazz, R&B and pop realms over the past 15 years, Mark McLean had a single criterion when it came time to expand his horizons beyond the groove and record his long awaited breakout as a powerhouse composer and lyricist: it had to Feel Alright. Celebrate the release of this eclectic 11 track set on Wednesday, May 28th at 7:30pm, and feel Mark's love for everything from old school soul, down and dirty blues/funk and traditional jazz to Southern folk-pop with a zydeco twist, Rat Pack-like swing, edgy pop/rock and New Orleans brass band music. Purchase tickets here.

SubCulture: What’s/Who’s your favorite song/band/artist right now? Mark McLean: Stevie Wonder will forever be on my playlist. Last night I was listening to his album Talking Book and I must have played “You and I” ten times in a row. Amazing!
SC: What was the first concert you ever went to?
MM: This was a while ago. My first concert was a exhibition stadium in Toronto. My Dad took my brother and I to see Anita Baker (Michael Bolton was the opener). We were sitting in the nose bleeds (LOL!). Amazing day though. That may have been the beginning for me. Thanks Dad!
SC: What is the hardest part about being on the road during a tour MM: Missing my family and friends (birthdays, holidays). Well that and getting the middle seat on the plane from Perth, Australia to Los Angeles.
SC: Who inspired you to become a musician?
MM: There are so many influences. I learned a lot from my brother Lester and we were both influenced by our older cousin Kojo (amazing bass player). And of course let’s not forget Michael Jackson’s Thriller. We wore that album out!
SC: What is your secret talent/party trick?
MM: I can drum on anything or anyone.
