Wednesday, December 19: Magnum, âOn the Edge of the Worldâ
âOn the Edge of the Worldâ presented the more hard rock-oriented side of Chase the Dragon, showcasing the particular chemistry of Magnumâs best lineup and setting its members up for lengthy careers in and around the AOR universe. Â Magnum was never the heaviest of hitters, as they essentially updated the template laid out by Uriah Heep a decade earlier and, in a lot of ways, created an early (and more British) version of the sound Bon Jovi would take to the bank about 5 years later. Â Bob Catley wasnât a screamer, nor was he a crooner exactly, but his smooth vocals fit the foundation established by Tony Clarkinâs riffing, while Mark Stanwayâs keyboards were flashy but not overly obtrusive. Â âOn the Edge of the Worldâ was about as regal as melodic hard rock got in 1982, and succeeded in building up Magnumâs profile in the UK.
