Double 8 Yellow Earth, MARITZA PEREZ

This is one in a series of abstractions on cedar wood shingles from a demolished house. Soft yellow and putty color round shape reminds me of number 8 and a women body, a torso, or a fruit. A painted strip of acrylic terracota color frames a top corner. The collaged paper is organic in nature and the lines of color is straight and minimal. A play of structured rigidity and free flowing natural forms. The distressed cedar shingles reference home, trees, the passage of time and life. I wanted to create direct, intuitive pieces with the minimal amount of forms and materials letting the material, instant and moment speak freely. The cedar shingle piece is uneven, distressed, wider on top like a rustic ancient mask and a modernistic cubist art work at the same time.

This image represents a moment of that time removed from the reality of historical events and the devastation of the land and despair that changed the life of native people from Mexico and the North American West forever.

Hand erasing traces of sun-bleached afternoons and romantic scriptures letting the dust of dry flowers blow in the wind. Ocean mist returns the fragrance once spilled in the air bringing new petals to be memorialized into a new belief system.
