Two day marine chronometer used and owned by Captain Robert Fitzroy on board HMS Beagle in 1828.
The Beagle had 22 chronometers on board during her expeditions (1826-1830 and 1831-1836), but not all were provided by the Admiralty. Only 10 came from the Admiralty, 6 were brought by Fitzroy himself ( he became Beagles captain in December 1828) and, one by Lord Ashburnham and the remaining 5 by the clockmakers themselves. The high number of chronometers was needed to test their quality and accuracy, during the expeditions.Ā

Now, the more clever amongst you ā or those with really good memories ā might be asking how we could be revisiting a watch when itās coming from a brand that weāve never reviewed before? Ā Well, things change over time, and amongst those things are watches and watch brand names. Ā So, today, weāre talking about theĀ Marine Chronometer Co Field Engineer.
You see, we have looked at this watch before ā or itās forbear, at least. Ā Back in 2012, it was known as the Offshore Professional Field Engineer, and now itās known as theĀ Marine Chronometer Co Field Engineer. Ā Under the old name (and style) we did do our own hands-on review, which you check out here (part 1, part 2, part 3). Ā This time around, due to them being built-to-order, weāre just talking about the new watch.
And you might wonder, well, why is Patrick talking about a chronograph? Ā Back when I checked out the older version, I really got to liking the piece, even if I wasnāt particularly using all of the functions. Ā Here, weāve got the same sort of functions (base is still the Valjoux 7750), but there is a very noticeable change ā the day/date windows. Ā These are custom to the brand, and presented just below the logo (ie, where youād normally expect the date window to pop in).
In my opinion, the new dial configuration of theĀ Marine Chronometer Co Field Engineer is an improvement over the original as well. Ā Itās still got the dimensionality and layers, but weāve got some additional color popping in. Ā Iām also a fan of the tachymeter bezel being added (though you can get the Roman numeral one instead if you like, and am really glad the knurling stayed present on the crown and pushers.
At the end of the day, the asking price of £1650Ā (~$2,300) feels pretty reasonable ā as we said before ā for what youāre getting here. Ā Particularly for the fact that the fellow behind the brand, Lorne Gifford, is actually traveling the world as a field engineer (hey, look at that title!) and putting his watch through some more extensive paces than we might actually put the watch through ourselves (some photos of that are in the gallery below). Ā So, if youāre in the market for a small-brand chronograph with a storied movement in it, theĀ Marine Chronometer Co Field Engineer should be on your short list to check out.
