The path to cognizance (ma'rifa) is not a process of learning. It is a process of bringing out from the depths of one’s spirit what he had known all along. The goal of the Sufi Tariqah is Complete Ma’rifah (Knowledge of God), not dreams, visions, miracles and predications of the future. Don’t be fooled by all of that. Follow an Arif (knower of God) who can make you an Arif. Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse (may Allah sanctify his secret.) said: ﻭ ﻣﻦ ﻟﻢ ﻳﻨﻞ ﻣﻌﺮﻓﺔ ﺍﻟﺮﺣﻤﻦ ﻓﻘﺪ ﺿﺎﻉ ﻋﻤﺮﻩ ﻣﺪﻯ ﺍﻻﺯﻣﺎﻥ And whoever did not attain the Ma’rifah (Certain Knowledge) of Allah Then he has wasted his lifetime forever!
"Shariah is for Nafs, Tariqah is for body and Heart, Haqiqah is for Soul and Marifa is for the Inner Secret. The Shariah is only for the Nafs as every Nafs needs a cage to keep it tame, but some are already tame. Tariqah is for the Soul and gives the Soul Nourishment, allowing it to breathe and be free and roam with love and taste love. Haqiqah the Truth, is tasting or the experience gained from Tariqah practices, its a state of mind and being it must be experienced. Knowledge of Allah. Imam Abu al-Qasim al-Qushayrī (rahimahullah) reports that Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqah (radiAllahu anha) said:
“The foundation of support for the house is Deen. The support of deen is knowledge of Allah” (The Most High). Junaid Baghdadi (rahimahullah) said:
“ how will you become arif?
“You will not be able to get knowledge of Allah unless you be like earth, humble.” Hazrat Bayazid Bastami (rahimahullah) said:
“The knowledge of Allah is acquired by abandoning that which belongs to you and keep the duties that are due by you to the people.” Hazrat Dhul-Nun-al-Misri (rahimahullah) said:
“One sign of a person who has knowledge of Allah is that he has empty thoughts of the world and only remembers Allah (Ismul Jalaalah). The company of the Arif is like having the company of Allah - he treats you with gentleness and kindness.”
