See You Later from Photo Editor Marie McGrory

This week I am starting a new role as a producer on National Geographic’s Travel team. I wanted to write a quick note to let you all know while you won’t be seeing me here as often and in the same capacity, I definitely could never leave this wonderful community. I look forward to seeing each of you in new ways here on Your Shot as well as on natgeotravel.com. Thank you for expanding my eyes and mind each day through your passion for photography. –Marie

Submit to the Islands Assignment

Are you about to head out on your summer vacation or just came back from your island adventure? We want to see your photos! Go further than just the cliche beach shot with the swaying palms; we want to see what makes an island unique, it’s cultures and traditions. Marie McGrory, one of the assignment editors said it best in her last update, “If you live on one of our earth's thousands of inhabited islands, tell us your story. If you are traveling to one, talk to a native and learn their stories. If you are landlocked at home, find someone in your city that is from an island and talk to them.”

 In our Baker’s Dozen feature we highlight photographs we love that didn’t quite make the Daily Dozen.

 This is a very beautiful and quiet photograph. Without bright colors and bold shapes, it can be easy to miss if you are not looking carefully. The young girl's silhouette highlighted by the reflecting water behind her caught my eye first. The girl's hair falling in front of her face adds to the adventurous and playful feel. Next, I noticed the sailboat as it is frozen near her line of sight. The dark blue hues of the skyline are comforting. Finally, I see the outreached hand. For me, it completed the composition. There is enough story to love, and enough mystery to keep me coming back to the image.

This summer Senior Photo Editor Susan Welchman retired after 35 years at National Geographic Magazine. I had a chance to chat with her before her last day.
