The Texas Marfa Lights
The mysterious Marfa Lights are located East of Marfa, TX on US 90. There's a viewing area where people can witness strange colored lights on the horizon, oddly appearing and fading quickly. Some say the lights are pale blue, others say the lights are a bright white. Whichever color, they are miles in the distance, but easy to see.
Skeptics believe the lights are just reflections off of traveling cars. The town of Marfa swears they are a unexplainable phenomenon, and celebrates their wonder every year on Labor Day.
Marfa is a town I don’t belong to but I still want to know all its secrets. It is a terribly human thing: to drop ourselves somewhere, someone—ask them immediately about the things that make them tick. What does it take to become more than a tourist to someone else’s story? But I left you before the night was over. So we remain unsolved, unresolved, a mystery as haunting as those Marfa Lights, orbs twinkling in the desert. The Native Americans believed they were fallen stars; old cattle herders thought, “Apache campfires.” Science says—car headlights, refraction, optical illusion, mirage. Does it matter?
