10,000 Dresses by Marcus Ewert
Every night, Bailey dreams about magical dresses: dresses made of crystals and rainbows, dresses made of flowers, dresses made of windowsโฆ. Unfortunately, when Bailey's awake, no one wants to hear about these beautiful dreams. Quite the contrary, "You're a BOY!" Mother and Father tell Bailey. "You shouldn't be thinking about dresses at all." Then Bailey meets Laurel, an older girl who is touched and inspired by Bailey's imagination and courage. In friendship, the two of them begin making dresses together. And Bailey's dreams come true! This gorgeous picture book - a modern fairy tale about becoming the person you feel you are inside - will delight people of all ages.
Marcus Ewert
โTo hear him say it, Marcus Ewert was a young man on a mission. In 1988 he was living in suburban Atlanta, just another isolated gay teen who spent much of his free time dreaming of a way out. Unlike other boys in his predicament, though, the then-17-year-old was ambitious and strategic. He was desperate to immerse himself in the literary scene, and being a fan of the beat writers, he zoned in on two of its most prominent figures: Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs.โ

โAllen and Burroughs were still alive and they were both gay, and in their work it was pretty explicit that they liked teenage boys,โ says Ewert, now 43. โAllen has all these poems about sleeping with boys in Naropa, which is where I realized I could go to meet them. So, I was like, Perfect, I know what to do. โฆAllen and Burroughs teach there? You donโt have to tell me twice.โ
