-  raised  in  millry,   alabama  in  a  large  family  home  alongside  a  sister  five  years  her  junior.   her  father  being  a  lawyer  and  her  mother  being  a  stay  at  home  mom. -  marcie  grows  up  happy  and  well  loved,   both  by  family  and  by  the  other  children  in  her  small  town.   around  the  age  of  twelve,   she  starts  to  feel  different  than  the  other  boys  in  school.   she'd  always  had  a  fascination  with  her  mother's  clothes  and  makeup  and  her  younger  sister's  toys,   but  the  fascination  only  grows  stronger,   along  with  the  startling  realization  that  she  doesn't  like  the  girls  in  her  class  the  way  her  friends  do. -  marcie  starts  going  out  with  her  childhood  best  friend,   betty  moore,   in  an  attempt  to  put  up  a  nice,   normal  front  in  front  of  her  classmates.   in  secret,   she  starts  sneaking  around  with  her  best  friend,   jeremy. -  at  16,   marcie  tragically  breaks  her  leg  severely  at  a  tennis  game.   the  injury  is  bad  enough  to  leave  her  with  chronic  knee  pain  that  comes  and  goes  over  the  years,   as  well  as  ruining  her  dreams  of  having  a  tennis  career. -  while  recovering  from  her  injury,   she's  caught  kissing  her  boyfriend  by  one  of  her  friend  from  school.  her  reputation  being  that  of  the  perfect  christian  boy,   and  his  being  that  of  a  troublemaker,   rumors  are  quick  to  start  flying  about  marcie  having  been  pushed  to  kiss  him.   despite  knowing  it's  not  true,   marcie  couldn't  bring  herself  to  speak  up,   leading  to  a  messy  breakup  with  her  boyfriend. -  after  spending  her  senior  year  depressed  after  her  broken  leg,   her  breakup  with  her  boyfriend,   and  an  eventual  breakup  with  her  girlfriend,   marcie's  parents  get  her  a  temporary  job  as  a  junior  park  ranger  far  from  home  for  a  month  out  of  the  summer  in  the  hopes  that  the  change  of  scenery  will  bring  her  her  joy  back.   not  only  does  she  fall  back  in  love  with  nature  and  decide  to  go  into  plant  science  instead  of  law  like  her  father  wanted  her  to,   her  guiding  ranger  helped  her  face  her  gender  and  sexuality. -  once  the  summer's  up,   marcie  moves  to  montgomery  to  start  college.   she  stays  with  her  former  coworker  from  her  summer  job  who  helps  her  get  on  estrogen  and  introduces  her  to  all  the  best  gay  bars  in  their  city.   she  stops  talking  to  her  parents  for  a  few  years  for  fear  of  how  they  might  react.   eventually,   she  writes  a  letter  to  come  out  to  them,   and  after  some  time  mulling  it  over,   they  learn  to  accept  her  and  love  her  for  who  she  is. -  after  graduating  college  with  a  doctorate  in  plant  sciences,   marcie  begins  a  career  as  a  botanist.   she  spends  her  adulthood  helping  her  younger  sister,   marie  -  ann,   with  raising  her  two  young  children  as  their  passionate  and  loving  aunt.

Despite all this, all the glitz and the glam and the legend, one thing is for sure, music may have been her first love, but her family is her biggest love.
