Mary I's whole reign has not been given the Hollywood treatment like her father's, sister's and the disputed Queen she overthrew. Bits of her reign we have seen have been through productions that have her as a secondary character and at most times the antagonist. There are many events of her reign that should be portrayed. Starting with the death of her younger brother, then the overthrow of Jane Grey as Queen, her joyous ascension as the first acknowledged Queen Regnant of England and the hope of her nation of her cementing her rightful place. Then we would have the private life of her finding a husband, her marriage to Philip II, of Spain, her goal to become pregnant and her failed two pregnancies. This will also include her relationship with her half-sister and her battling her maternal emotion towards her, the fact they are rivals and figureheads for different sides of the court all whilst by the same act that made Mary the rightful heir to Edward (and why many supported her overthrow of Jane) made Elizabeth her own heir. With her marriage we should see how the populace felt about the marriage and the Wyatt's rebellion leading to the imprisonment of her sister and the execution of the disputed Queen (Jane) she overthrew and her supporters. We should also see her religious policies. This should include the her personal vendetta against and eventual downfall of Thomas Cranmer. The downfall of his fellow religious leaders Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley and burnings of everyday protestants while also seeing the reinstatement of Catholicism and the Catholic faction being restored and returning to England (like Reginald Pole). Finally, we should see the loss of the final bit of French land England had Calais.

Philip, later II of Spain on the occasion of his marriage to his second cousin Mary I, Queen of England was granted the titles that his wife enjoyed and was to be the co-ruler of her realm (not her consort as later husbands of Queen Regnant's were known as), making him officially Philip, King of England. We cannot underestimate how infatuated Mary was with her younger husband and how much she wished to please him whereas it is thought he saw the marriage as a more political venture. Acts were made making it high treason to dispute and deny his authority in England. His image was seen jointly with his wife on coins and the great seal, with all acts of parliament having both their signatures. During his tenure England welcomed back Papal authority (which Spain never lost). England was bought into Spain's long-term feud with France, which resulted in the loss of England's last stronghold on the continent, Calais which many blame Philip for. Philip had many mistresses during his marriage and is thought to have had a flirtation with his sister in law Elizabeth causing distress to his wife. Together the couple were known as Philip and Mary, by the Grace of God, King and Queen of England, Spain, France, Jerusalem, both the Sicilies and Ireland, Defenders of the Faith, Archdukes of Austria, Dukes of Burgundy, Milan and Brabant, Counts of Habsburg, Flanders and Tirol.
