A Very Short Fact: On this day in 1776, Famous explorer, captain, and navigator Captain James Cook embarked on his third exploration. Cook is best known for charting a number of areas including New Zealand, Newfoundland, and Hawaii, as well as for his adventures at sea.
“If the Pacific Ocean was the Enlightenment’s “New World,” then Cook was its Columbus. He did not in any sense “discover” the Pacific; nor was he even the first eighteenth-century seaman to sojourn among its island peoples. But he was the first to take full measure of both, to bring order, coherence, and completion to the map of the Pacific from the Arctic to the Antarctic, and to disclose to the world the broad lineaments of Polynesian cultures. His personal ambition led him “not only farther than any man has been before me,” as he put it, “but as far as I think it possible for man to go.” For this he is the explorer’s explorer. But although bold, Cook was not reckless. His voyages set an altogether new standard for maritime safety and well-being, and their significance goes far beyond the attainment of such arbitrary geographical objectives as his famous ne plus ultra of 71°10´ south. They contributed decisively to the development of such established disciplines as astronomy, oceanography, meteorology, and botany, and to the founding, in the next century, of such new ones as ethnology and anthropology.”

Rescued Mermaid Specimen Curio Box with Signed PRINT
Journal Entry Mermaid Rescued I have found an increasing number of wounded mermaids on my patrols of the coast line as of late. Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident as I have found multiple species of mermaids injured all over the world the past few years. Sadly a mermaids natural curiosity of man has caused many to become tangled in fishing lines and nets which has only gotten worse over the years with increased over-fishing in mermaid territories. Due to the large amount of wounded mermaids I have encountered and treated over the years I have began to take samples of each mermaid to better understand them and aid me in treating them. For example different species of mermaid have different blood types, not only in type but also in colour, ranging from the normal hue of red to turquoise and many more. I will be keeping a detailed map of where I find each mermaid to help locate hot spots for where an injured mermaid is most likely to be found. I only wish I could prevent them from being harmed in the first place. ~Burned Raven ~ Note: I have found that all the mermaids I have saved offer me a sea shell and a song, a sign of friendship among the mermaids and a friendship I cherish dearly.
