I mean. I guess at least now I can access the “force” mode? ‘Cause I couldn’t before, at least not on mobile. But good god. Whhhyyyyyyyyyy

Key for what’s even going on, just so you’re aware: green means the reblog has a comment. Blue means it has tags, but no comment. Plain means no tags or comment (a silent reblog).

This is neat for data purposes? But visually. Jesus it’s cluttered

I suppose I could get over the aesthetic hurdle just for the data part though. The ratio of comments/tags vs silent reblogs on different posts could get interesting. But. Oh my god. Why does it have to look like that

I get the feeling this won’t be the last time the maps get changed. I think for now I’m going to keep tagging them with “reblog tree”, though I’ll probably end up mapping posts with both kinds (tree & force) now that i have access to the force option.

They have a much less organic feel than the original maps, and I don’t like them as much, but I’m still running this blog and mapping — or, tree-ing, I guess — posts, when I feel like it. Hello, welcome to the reblog map blog! I add maps to posts, talk about / answer questions about reblog maps, I answer asks of all sorts (don’t be afraid to send me random stuff — I like chatting with you guys!), and sometimes I’ll make my own posts.

This is just a silly little gimmick blog because, as the name suggests, I like reblog maps! I find all the shapes fascinating and fun to watch.

The typical size range for maps on here is between 0-2,000 10k reblogs, as more than 2k reblogs is usually too many to fit onto the screen (I’ve started tiling images for larger maps). Also, I’m on mobile, so my upper limit is around 10k 20k for my phone’s safety (I’ve gotten bolder).

basic info: reblog loops are a phenomenon in reblog maps where, sometimes, there are reblog-dots connected in a sort of loop. feel free to check out my tag on them for examples.

something i’ve noticed about loops is that they almost always (or maybe always always?) connect back to the root post. i’m not really sure why, but it’s a pattern i’ve seen in them for a while now, i just never bothered to mention it, before.

something else i’ve started noticing more recently, though, is that the number of dots in a loop depends on which reblog of a post you’re viewing, and how deep in the map that reblog is.

for example: the map of this post i made a bit ago.

when viewed from the root post, the red-circled reblog, or the orange-circled reblog, the map looks like this.

the loops in the map, however, look like this. the triangle is when viewed from the green-circled reblog, and the square is from the blue-circled reblog.

it’s interesting how the ‘current post’ dot is never a part of the loop, just the dot before it. i’ve noticed this pattern in every other reblog loop, and i’m pretty confident that if you look through my reblog loops tag, they’ll all be the same way.

so, it seems that reblog loops aren’t an inherent part of maps, but are instead caused by viewing a map from a reblog of a certain depth, and the minimum depth for a loop to occur seems to be 3 reblogs deep.

i’ve just tested this on a few random posts to see if i’m right, and i think i am. it seems like loops will always form if you view a post from 3 or more reblogs deep.

do i know why this happens? no, i don’t have a clue. a bug, maybe, or perhaps it’s some obscure intentional feature for some reason.

i don’t, actually, i just screenshot them while they’re moving! it sometimes makes the image tiling i need to do on larger maps a little funky if i’m too slow about it, but i’m alright with that.

i’m assuming you’re talking about the lines of dots across the big hub. here’s what i know about that:

that’s a visual phenomenon that only shows up on maps with larger hubs, like the one in your image. the larger the hub, the more visible / numerous those lines will become.

the original post, or the “root post”, has a unique marking on the map: a circle with a little dot in the middle, and it’s slightly larger than the regular reblog dots.

if you’re looking for it and you’re having trouble finding it, you can click on any of the reblog dots in a map, and it’ll highlight the path back to the root, so you can also find it that way! here’s a quick example (the red markings are drawn on):
