Warren Cuffee - Montauk Native American Civil War Veteran

Descripton: Caption on back of photo reads: The part played in the Civil War by American Indians representing both Eastern and Southern Tribes would require a book itself. With the Patriotism that has beem characteristic of our race, our people have flung themselves into the wars unselfishly, receiving so little in return. This is an interesting photo of a dashing Montauk Indian Civil War veteran, who was a member of the Eastville Band of the Sag Harbor Montauks. The long hair and the Kentucky Colonel type of moustache and the goatee give Warren Cuffee a look of distinction as someone remarked. "He looks like an Indian Buffalo Bill". The Cuffe's are buried in the old cemetery in Sag Harbor and some in the Northwest woods in East Hampton township, at the old site of the Cuffee homestead.
