Just two of my fav historical matadors.

I am currently reading a biography of El Cordobés, which i found in the bookshelf of my grandpa (he travelled through Spain a lot during El Cordobés prime, so he got it to get more insights about it back then) and MY GOD. His story could easily be a movie. Growing up in the chaos of the Spanish civil war, he lost his parents early and grew up in extreme poverty, almost starved and then one day he decided to become a matador and risked his life many times on his path until he later became one of the richest and most successful matadors ever. It's really worth to check out the book, it's "Or I'll Dress You In Mourning" by Larry Collins and Dominique LaPierre. I got a lot of inspo for my matador oc Montoya.

Große Spanienreise III

Andalusien: 06.01. - 01.02.2025

Manuel Rodriguez Sanchez: MANOLETE (1917-1947)

Immer wieder findet man in Andalusien. So auch auf unserer "Großen Spanienreise III" mit Aufenthalten in Sevilla, Jerez, Sanlucar, Cadiz, Cordoba u.a. Hier entdeckten wir Fotos und Stierkampfplakate des berühmten Matadors Manuel Rodriguez Sanchez, genannt "Manolete" ("4. Kalif von Cordoba"), der in seinem mutigen Kampf in der Arena von Linares 1947 von dem Stier (Islero) an den Folgen einer schweren Verletzung gestorben war. Heute noch wird am 28. August in Linares zu seinen Ehren und Gedenken eine Schweigeminute abgehalten.

Während eines Streifzuges durch Cordoba hatten wir durch Zufall dessen Geburtshaus entdeckt (Calle Conde de Toreos de Cabrera). Nachbarn erklärten uns, dass es in der Nähe eine große Skulptur des Stierkämpfers gibt (s. Abb.; Plaza del Conde de Priego). In Jerez wurde neben der Stierkampfarena eine Straße nach Manolete benannt (u. rechts)

Natürlich ist "Manolete" auch im Stierkampfmuseum (Cordoba) zu sehen. Im Hof des Museums steht auch eine große Büste von "Manolete".

Hier sei auch nochmal erwähnt, dass wir in Marbella den Besitzer des "Taberna Casa Curro" bereits auf der letzten grossen Reise kennengelernt hatten, der sich zur Familie von "Manolete" zählt. Wir kamen damals mit ihm ins Gespräch, weil für uns sehr für das Portrait von "Manolete" interessierten, welches in seinem Lokal neben anderen Berühmtheiten ausgestellt war.

Manolete was one of the most famous Spanish bullfighters of the 1940s. Of course, in Spanish bullfighter’s have a more accurate name - Matadors (killers). The bull always dies in the bull ring (or a short time later).

Most of the time, the Matador wins the competition. But that wasn’t the case with Manolete. In August 1947 the bull won, goring Manolete in the thigh. He was taken out of the ring to receive first aid but died a short time later. The exact cause was never revealed but it is suspect he received a transfusion of the wrong blood type.
