      two steps are taken backwards, until her left hip finds the edge of her desk.  she regards, head tilted, unblinking.   ‘  you’re decrepit, mr. mannion.  your dying power is all you have left, and you know it.  you’ve let them get so far under your skin that it’s taken over your life.  ’   he reminds her of her old boyfriends, the ones that used her as arm candy, remind her not to eat too much, get upset if she asked too many questions or spoke too loud.  he reminds her of every powerful man she’s been in the same room in since she was sixteen, the ones that she can read from a mile away  —  because behind the money, the power, the botox, they’re just  men.   ‘  i’d almost feel sorry for you, if you weren’t such a hateful old sack of bones.  ’
